The main sporting event of the weekend is the start of the Winter Olympic Games in Milan known as Milano Cortina 2026. It is the largest winter sports event in history, bringing to the start over 3,500 athletes from 93 countries, who will compete for 195 medals in 16 Olympic disciplines. The competitions will take place in eight Italian towns, becoming, in terms of surface area, the largest edition of the Winter Olympic Games in history. We now move on to handball, because this weekend games will be played in the European competitions for women’s teams. In the Champions League, Group A, on Saturday, Gloria Bistrița will play away against the French team Metz. On Sunday, in Group B, CSM București will meet, at home, another French team: Brest Bretagne. With three rounds remaining in this phase of the competition, both Romanian teams occupy 4th place in their groups. The top two teams in each group will go directly to the quarterfinals. The teams in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places will play play-off matches for a place in the quarterfinals. The teams in 7th and 8th places leave the competition.
The EHF European League enters the second part of the group stage, with the fourth round. Minaur Baia Mare, the leader of Group A, will play on Saturday, at home, against the German team Thüringer. On Sunday, Rapid București, the team ranked 2nd in Group C, will face another German team, Oldenburg, away, and Corona Brașov, ranked 3rd in Group D, will meet, at home, the Danish team Viborg. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
