Romania believes in a more competitive Europe and, in this regard, supports solid partnerships with the United Kingdom, said the Romanian Foreign Minister, Oana Ţoiu, during a meeting in London with the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Yvette Cooper. Boosting economic cooperation with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, one of Romania’s most valuable strategic partners, was a priority of Minister Oana Ţoiu during the discussions in the United Kingdom.

Official data shows that in the first 10 months of 2025, trade in goods amounted to 3.48 billion euros, with the United Kingdom ranking 11th in the top of direct foreign investors. “Today, we have agreed to launch, by this summer, the joint Romania-UK working group for trade and investment, as well as the path for Romania’s accession to the OECD in 2026. Two excellent pieces of news confirm our concrete actions for business-friendly reforms: today, we have published in the Official Gazette the last step to avoid double taxation between companies in Romania and the United Kingdom, the order of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and, also today, the fiscal policy milestone necessary for accession to the OECD was approved,” Minister Oana Țoiu said on Monday.

The Working Group’s initiative is part of efforts dedicated to stimulating strategic investments in areas such as renewable energy, retail, health, technology or IT, while the new Convention for the elimination of double taxation with respect to taxes on income and on capital gains, which has already taken effect since January, offers a multitude of advantages. At the same time, alignment with OECD standards offers British and Romanian investors increased fiscal stability and predictability, transparent rules, anti-abuse protection, essential conditions for attracting investments and developing economic cooperation.

Oana Țoiu also discussed with Yvette Cooper about the safety of citizens, the fight against organized crime, the theme of the Romanian Lectorate at the University of Oxford and the expansion of access to Romanian language courses in British schools. At the same time, interest was expressed in continuing to capitalize on the remarkable contribution to the strengthening of the bilateral relationship of the over 1.3 million Romanian citizens living in the United Kingdom.

The two ministers reconfirmed the common vision on peace and security, as well as the firm commitment to Euro-Atlantic security, materialized including through the participation of the United Kingdom, within NATO, in missions carried out on Romania’s territory. In the context of discussions related to European and Euro-Atlantic security, the head of Romanian diplomacy pointed out that Romania would prioritize building capabilities, improving interoperability, stimulating defense production and capitalizing on innovation, while ensuring complementarity between EU and NATO processes.
