STRIKE The administrative reform, the policy of curbing public expenditures and their impact upon towns and villages around Romania has been the theme of a fresh round of debates staged today in Bucharest by the Association of Romanian Communes. The event has also been attended by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, who has said that the absence of the right measures aimed at rendering the local public administration effective, will lead to a reduction in the number of communes. Bolojan has mentioned the very big budget deficit Romania is presently facing, which the government has pledged to reduce. According to him, salaries are being covered from local taxes but in Romania revenues from local taxes are covering only one quarter of the salaries. The debates have been held concurrently with a warning strike held in over 13 hundred city and town halls around the country, while the aforementioned institutions are being closed to the public. Employees are dissatisfied with the measures comprised in the administration reform package as well as the level of local taxes. The reform package aimed at the local and central administration is to be endorsed by the government in its session this week, the Prime Minister said.
