The Milano-Cortina Olympic Games will conclude at the end of this week. So far, the best result of Romanian athletes was the 5th place occupied by Mihai Tentea and George Iordache in the two-person bobsleigh event. On Thursday, in the individual figure skating event, Romania’s representative, the German-born athlete Julia Sauter, took 17th place. This was the best ranking of a skater from Romania at the Olympic Games.
On Sunday, in the Rugby Europe Championship, Group B, third round, the Romanian team meets, away, the Portuguese team. In the first round, the Stejarii lost, in Heidelberg, to Germany, and in the second, they defeated, in Iaşi, the Belgian team. At the moment, Romania occupies 2nd place in the group hierarchy. The top two teams qualify for the semi-finals of the competition.
In women’s handball, the last stage of the Champions League groups and the EHF European League takes place this weekend. In the Champions League, on Saturday, CSM Bucharest plays, at home, in Group B, with Ikast, from Denmark. At the moment, the Romanian champion occupies 3rd place in the group and, depending on the results, may climb to second place. In Group A, on Sunday, Gloria Bistrita will play, away, with the Norwegian team Storhamar. Gloria Bistrita occupies 4th place, which they cannot change regardless of the results of this last stage. The top two teams in each group will go directly to the quarter-finals. The teams in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places will play, crosswise, play-off matches for a place in the quarter-finals.
In the EHF European League, Group A, on Saturday, Minaur Baia Mare plays in Hungary with Mosonmagyaróvár and needs at least a draw to secure one of the top two places in the standings. Also on Saturday, in Group D, in Braşov, Corona meets the Polish team Zaglebie Lublin, but cannot climb higher than 3rd place in the standings. On Sunday, in Group C, Rapid meets the Croatian team Lokomotiva Zagreb in Bucharest and will remain in first place regardless of the result. Only the top two teams in each group advance to the “quarterfinals”.
This weekend, round number 28 of the Romanian Football Super League takes place. On Friday, two matches: Oţelul Galaţi with UTA and FC Botoşani with “U” Cluj. On Saturday, CFR meets Petrolul Ploieşti in Cluj, and the derby of the round takes place in Bucharest, between Rapid and Dinamo. On Sunday, in Mioveni, FC Argeş plays against the Constanta team Farul, then, in Slobozia, Unirea meets Universitatea Craiova. On Monday, in Miercurea Ciuc, Csikszereda has as its opponent the Sibiu team Hermannstadt, and in Bucharest, FCSB faces Metaloglobus. Craiova leads the standings, with 53 points. Dinamo follows, with 52.
