President Nicuşor Dan and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan appreciated, four years after Russia invaded Ukraine, the courage and resistance shown by the Ukrainian people and conveyed that Romania would continue to support the neighboring state, which is fighting for the whole of Europe and ensuring the security of the continent. ‘We are with you to achieve a just and comprehensive peace and to establish security guarantees that should prevent the possibility of any new aggression from Russia. This remains essential for us, as the security of Romania and of the entire continent is closely linked to that of Ukraine,’ conveyed Nicuşor Dan, after he participated in the meeting of the Coalition of the willing which includes Kyiv’s allies.

In turn, the Romanian Foreign Minister, Oana Ţoiu, wrote on a social media network that Romania chose in 2022 to be on the right side of history, supporting Ukraine, and also that it would continue on this path. A peace ‘dictated by force is not peace’, but only a pause in the face of an aggression that will not stop, Oana Ţoiu said. And the Minister of Defense, Radu Miruţă, declared that ‘4 years ago, the world changed in one morning. A war in Europe, something that many of us thought was impossible, began right next to our border’. ‘We opened our homes. We helped. We showed solidarity. We were humane’ he added.

At an event marking four years of response and coordination in support of refugees from Ukraine, held in Bucharest, the Minister of Investments and European Projects, Dragoş Pîslaru, assured that ‘Ukrainians are not alone, Romania is with them not only for temporary protection, but also to rebuild homes and reunite families.’ Events marking the period of four years since Russia invaded the neighboring state were organized in several cities in the country. And several emblematic buildings in Bucharest were illuminated on Tuesday in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, as a sign of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

On the other hand, several Romanian officials were in Kyiv on Tuesday. Senator Cristian Niculescu Ţâgârlaş said from the neighboring country that the war unleashed by the Russian Federation in Ukraine must be stopped before it spreads to other states, including NATO member states. He underlined that ‘Romania’s message is a very clear one of solidarity and support’. Also present in Kyiv, MP Ionuţ Moşteanu, former defense minister, supported the need for a ceasefire, but declared himself convinced that this would not happen without solid guarantees granted to Ukraine. He said that Romania would continue to play an important role in security in the region and assured that the country would participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine.

It should also be noted that official data show that millions of Ukrainian refugees have transited Romania since the beginning of the Russian invasion, and most of them continued to travel to other countries in Europe. At the end of last year, there were almost 200,000 Ukrainian refugees in the country, according to official figures. (LS)
