At European level, this weekend is dominated, from a sporting perspective, by rugby. International matches are taking place across all major competitions, starting with the Six Nations. On Friday, Ireland will host Wales. On Saturday, France will play in Scotland, followed by Italy taking on England in Rome. Romania’s team will play on Sunday, in Tbilisi, against Georgia, in the semifinal of the continent’s second-most prestigious competition, Rugby Europe Championship. The other semifinal is scheduled for Lisbon and will pit Portugal against Spain.

Georgia and Portugal earned the right to host the semifinals after winning their groups convincingly. Romania narrowly placed second in Group B, level on points with Belgium, but advancing due to a superior point differential.

In this year’s edition of the tournament, the Oaks have recorded two losses and one win. In the first round, they lost away in Heidelberg to Germany score 30 to 24, earning only a defensive bonus point. They then defeated Belgium at home in Iași, 23 to 6. In the final group stage round, they played Portugal away and lost 7 to 44, a match in which the Portuguese side earned an offensive bonus point. In Sunday’s semifinal against Georgia, the “Oaks” enter as the underdogs.

In the current world rankings, Georgia holds 13th place, just below Wales, and is ranked higher than Uruguay, Samoa, Tonga or any other teams in the Rugby Europe Championship. Romania is ranked 21st. In head-to-head matchups against the Georgians, the Romanians have not won since 2017. Back then, the “Oaks” prevailed in Bucharest score 8-7 to win Rugby Europe Championship. The last two encounters, both held in Tbilisi, ended with the same result: 43 to 5 in favor of Georgia. (VP)
