The Constitutional Court of Romania Tuesday ruled that the Government Emergency Ordinance on the Insolvency Code comes against the Constitution. The judges found that the emergency procedure was not necessary and that the Government cannot pass legislation that affects the operation of fundamental public institutions. The opposition described the new Code as an unprecedented attack against the freedom of the press and the business environment, whereas the Government argued the law was designed to effectively fight tax evasion.

Romania and Turkey have embraced their history and common past, the Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta said in Istanbul on Thursday. At the Yedikule Museum, he unveiled a plaque commemorating the Wallachian ruler Constantin Brâncoveanu, and his four sons, all executed in Istanbul in 1714, by the head of the Ottoman Empire. At the invitation of his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ponta took part in the opening of the first railway tunnel running underneath the Bosphorus Strait.

The EU Danube Strategy requires resources both during the current budget framework and in 2014 — 2020. The statement was made on Tuesday in Bucharest by the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Ciolos, who attended the Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region. The EU official added that the 14 countries on the Danube, Europe’s second-longest river, have common interests and the capacity to find common solutions. The Danube Strategy, a project launched by Romania and Austria, was adopted by the European Council in 2011.

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta had a meeting with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the Marmaray underwater tunnel in Istanbul. The two officials praised the very good bilateral cooperation and discussed a number of projects in fields like infrastructure, emergency management and preparation for major natural disasters. PM Ponta also thanked the Japanese government for its decision to extend the Visa Waiver programme for another 3 years.
