Romania got two bronze medals at the European Wrestling Championships for youth held in the Serbian city of Zrenjanin. On Thursday, Ana Maria Puiu stepped onto the third step of the podium in the 59 kilogram category, a performance repeated on Friday by Maria Magdalena Panţîru, in the 65 kilogram category.

On Saturday, Romanian athlete, Aexandru Firfirică, became silver medalist in the discus throw event at the European Cup in Nicosia, Cyprus. His throw measures 65 meters and 95 centimeters. The gold was obtained by Steven Richter of Germany, with a 67 meters and 29 centimeters throw. Ruben Rolvink of the Netherlands came third in the contest.

Romania’s national women’s basketball side conceded a 75-50 defeat to Poland in Sibiu, central Romania, on Saturday in a match counting towards the Group C of the preliminaries of the European Championships, EuroBasket 2027. In the group’s other match, Slovakia secured a 75-44 win against Cyprus. Poland tops the group’s table with 10 points, followed by Slovakia, with 8, Romania with 7, and Cyprus with 5. Poland has qualified for the second round of the qualifiers. The first two sides in each group qualify for the competition’s next stage as well as the best sides ranking third, 17 teams in total. In their last group game, the Romanians will be up against Slovakia in Bratislava.

Romania’s rugby side came fourth in the final ranking of the 2026 European Championships. “The Oaks”, as they are dubbed, lost the game for the third position on Sunday in Madrid against the local representative 29-23.  For the first time in history, the competition was won by Portugal, which outperformed Georgia in the finals, 19 – 17.

Last weekend saw the football matches counting towards the final stages of the Romanian Superleague. In the playoffs section, attended by sides aspiring to the title, on Friday, FC Arges secured a 1-0 win against Universitatea Craiova, while on Saturday in a genuine Bucharest derby, Rapid obtained a 3-2 home win against Dinamo.

Rapid now tops the ranking, one point ahead Universitatea Craiova. In the play-out section, which includes the sides struggling to avoid demotion, on Friday in Arad, local side UTA clinched a 3-2 win against Hermannstadt.

The same result was obtained by Csikszereda in Galaţi on Saturday, when they defeated Oţelul. On Sunday, in Ovidiu, Farul Constanţa secured a 2-0 against Petrolul Ploieşti, then in Bucharest, local side FCSB drew their match against Metaloglobus, nil-all. The leg’s last matches will be pitching Universitatea Cluj against CFR, in play-off, while FC Botoşani will be up against Unirea Slobozia, in play-out section.
