President Dan hosts OECD delegation for 2026 economic survey

The Romanian Head of State, Nicușor Dan, received the Secretary-General of the OECD, Mathias Cormann, on Monday. Mathias Cormann led an official delegation from the organization on the occasion of the launch of the 2026 Economic Survey for Romania.

The President conveyed that Romania’s accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development this year is a strategic objective, politically committed to by a broad majority through the substantial reforms already adopted. In the economic report released on Monday, the OECD recommends that Romania improve spending efficiency and expand the tax base. At the same time, Bucharest must tax property at market value with higher rates, and the tax administration must be digitized at an accelerated pace to improve tax collection.

Attending at the launch of the study, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan pointed out that the main directions pursued by the Government are the reduction of the deficit, the improvement of collection, the more efficient use of public money and a better absorption of European funds. In addition, structural reforms must continue, Ilie Bolojan added.

According to the survey results, Romania’s economy could record a growth of approximately 1% this year and 2.2% next year, amid the strengthening of demand from trade partners in the European Union. Estimates further show that inflation would fall to 3% next year, as the impact of previously adopted tax changes continues and a smaller increase in nominal wages reduces price pressures. The OECD analysis cites the prolongation of the conflict in the Middle East as the main risk, which could lead to higher inflation and more modest economic growth. Mathias Cormann participated in the launch alongside Prime Minister Bolojan and Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare.

EU flight repatriates 134 citizens from the Middle East

A flight financed by the European Union repatriated a further 134 European citizens from the Middle East on Sunday, including 96 Romanians, the European Commission Representation in Romania announced on Monday. According to the source, the total number of repatriated persons has thus reached over 11,000 in recent weeks.

Departing from Oman, the flight transported 96 Romanian citizens and 38 citizens from other European countries who had been stranded in the United Arab Emirates. Since the beginning of the escalation of the situation in the region at the end of February, the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre has supported nearly 90 flights, bringing European citizens back to Austria, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Sweden.

Romania rejects Iranian threats over US military presence

The Romanian diplomacy on Monday stated that it has taken note of the remarks made by the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, in which context it emphasizes that Romania is not a party to the conflict in the Middle East. The priority of the Romanian authorities remains the diplomatic effort for its de-escalation.

At the same time, the Romanian Foreign Ministry condemns the “completely unjustified attacks by Iran against states in the Gulf region” and thanks the latter “for having also protected our citizens present in their countries”. “We call on Iran to cease these attacks, which endanger human lives and lead to the degradation of global security and the economy”, the Ministry further stated.

On Monday, Tehran warned Romania that it could respond politically and legally after it allowed the United States to use bases on its territory for operations against Iran. The statements come after the Supreme Defense Council (CSAT) discussed last week the temporary deployment to Romania of American military equipment and forces in the context of the Middle East crisis, and Parliament approved the request to this effect from President Nicușor Dan.

This involves refueling aircraft, monitoring equipment, and satellite communications equipment, the latter in correlation with the missile defense shield at Deveselu (south), the Presidency noted. The deployment of military equipment and forces from the United States to Romania is expected to take place for a period of up to 90 days. American military equipment and forces of four to five hundred personnel are to be deployed at the bases at Mihail Kogălniceanu (south-east) and Câmpia Turzii (central).

Foreign Minister pushes for new sanctions at Brussels Council

Romania’s Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, on Monday attended the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting held in Brussels. Participants addressed dossiers critical to continental security, with a particular focus on the crisis in the Middle East, the new European Security Strategy and the evolution of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

On this final topic, Romania pleaded for overcoming current blockages and advancing rapidly on three essential directions for the stability of the region: accelerating the European integration of Ukraine and the neighboring Republic of Moldova, implementing the €90-billion loan to support Ukrainian resilience, and adopting the 20th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation.

Following her participation in the Foreign Affairs Council, Minister Țoiu was due to return to Bucharest to be present in the Romanian Parliament for the joint session of the committees for foreign policy and the joint session of the committees for European affairs of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, dedicated to the draft budget allocated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

2026 budget debates spark political friction

Romania’s 2026 draft budget arrived on Monday afternoon in the specialized parliamentary committees for debate and endorsement. According to the calendar, senators and deputies were able to submit amendments to the project during the morning.

Following the debates in the joint budget-finance committees, which will take place on Tuesday, the document will enter the discussion of the joint plenary of Parliament on Wednesday, with the final vote taking place on Thursday. After the PSD announced it would vote for the budget but would not give up on submitting amendments related to the social package, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated that the move is a populist one, given that it is not mentioned where the resources come from.

At the same time, the PNL pointed out that any attempt to impose changes through surprise votes in the legislature could violate the political agreement between the governing partners and risk generating a new political crisis.
