Romania must prove to its neighbours, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova or Georgia, that a successful path for a country is a democratic one, a pro-European and pro-Atlantic one. This statement was made by the Romanian PM, Victor Ponta, in an interview to CNN. He added that probably the most successful reform in Romania is the one in the energy sector, given that energy independence is the most important battle to win. In the same interview to CNN, PM Ponta announced that in the forthcoming days he would make an official visit to Kiev.
The Romanian State Secretary for European Affairs, George Ciamba, Monday took part in Brussels in a meeting of the General Affairs Council, the Romanian Foreign Ministry announced. The main topic on the agenda was the preparation of the European Council of October 23-24, which will focus on climate change, energy and the economic situation of the Union. Participants in the meeting also discussed the implementation of the decisions taken by the European Council on June 26-27, concerning the first pillar of the EU Strategic Agenda, regarding employment, growth and competitiveness.
IS fighters carry on their offensive in northern Syria, in spite of the air strikes launched by the US-headed coalition. According to AFP, they are just kilometers away from Ayn Al-Arab, the third-largest Kurdish town in Syria, near the Turkish border. The US and a group of Arab states, particularly from the Gulf area, Tuesday launched attacks against IS sites in Syria, where the group controls one-third of the territory. The strikes primarily targeted Jihadist bases and their makeshift refineries, so as to cut their funding source. Over 60 countries and international organisations have so far joined the coalition put together by the US against the Islamic State group.
