Simona Halep has won the Athlete of the Week title given weekly to the best Romanian performance
The Persian Gulf is these days

For the performance she obtained in
Dubai, Radio Romania International has designated Halep, Athlete of the Week. In
Dubai, Simona played straight into the round of 16 and had difficult matches against
Tunisian player Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. In the semifinals,
the Romanian clinched a two-set win, 6-2, 6-0 against American challenger
The final game was dramatic as
Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan managed to win the first set 6-3. Simona made a
come back winning the second also 6-3, and the tie-break that followed 7-5.
Simona has thus added to her prize list the 20th WTA title.
Born on September 27th
in 1991 in Constanta, southern Romania, Simona Halep made her debut in senior
tennis competitions in 2006, when she played her first games in the ITF
circuit. In 2010 she made her entry into Top 100. In August 2014 she made it to
the second position in the world's rankings, which represented the best
position ever occupied by an athlete from Romania.
In October 2017 Halep made it to
the first position in the world rankings, position that she kept until January
2018. She returned to the first position a month later and stayed there until
the beginning of 2019, after Australian Open. Halep stayed on top of the WTA
ranking for 64 weeks and now occupies the second position.
