An explosive-laden sea drone, drifting just a few hundred meters from operations at the strategic Neptun Deep energy platform, triggered one of the most serious security operations conducted by Romania in the Black Sea on Thursday. Two Romanian Air Force F-16s were scrambled, and one of them opened fire on the drone, striking the target.

Subsequently, a specialized team inspected and fully neutralized the target. The drone was located within Romania’s Exclusive Economic Zone—approximately 80 nautical miles east of Constanța—and was not of Ukrainian origin, a fact confirmed through direct communication channels with Kyiv. The incident is particularly serious given that Neptun Deep is not merely a gas extraction platform but a project with major implications for the energy security of both Romania and the region; consequently, any threat to it inherently takes on a strategic dimension.

President Nicușor Dan welcomed the operation and congratulated the Romanian military personnel, the pilots of the two F-16s, and the Coast Guard, which had detected the drone. The head of state emphasized that the priority was protecting the lives of the people on the platform and keeping critical infrastructure safe from harm. In the same message, Nicușor Dan strongly condemned what he described as an escalation of “irresponsible incidents” by the Russian Federation and reaffirmed that Romania remains vigilant alongside its NATO allies, ready to defend itself and repel any provocations targeting its national territory.

A swift reaction also came from Brussels. The European Union can respond rapidly—with unity and determination—to all threats, the European Commission President assured. Ursula von der Leyen described the situation as part of an “escalating campaign of threats” aimed at instilling fear among Europeans and sowing division within the European Union. “This is hybrid warfare,” von der Leyen stated, advocating for the strengthening of Europe’s capacity to deter provocations and acts of aggression. For its part, a NATO official declared that the Alliance stands ready to respond to any potential threat at any moment.
The operation on August 20 can be considered a military success: the threat was eliminated, the platform remained intact, and the personnel on site were protected. At the same time, however, the incident serves as a wake-up call. It demonstrates that Romania must be prepared to anticipate, counter, and rapidly respond to situations where aerial or maritime drones might appear near strategic assets.
