TALKS President Nicușor Dan is holding talks today with leaders of the former ruling coalition (made up of the PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR) and the current interim ministers of Finance and European Projects regarding the implementation status of projects under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The talks come as the deadline for meeting the Plan’s targets is August 31. The key issue at stake is unblocking the legislation on the unified wage system for public sector employees—a mandatory reform for securing nearly 800 million Euros in funding. However, the draft law has not yet reached Parliament; there is no formula agreed upon by either the political parties or the trade unions, and European officials in Brussels rejected the document’s latest version last night. The main issue flagged by the European Commission is the increase in the total wage bill from 8 billion to over 12 billion lei (approximately 2.4 billion euros) without a clearly specified funding source.

DEBT Romania’s public debt has exceeded 60% of the GDP, and under these circumstances, the government cannot approve measures, which are increasing the total expenses with the personnel and social assistance, Finance Minister, Alexandru Nazare wrote on Facebook on Wednesday. ‘With a public debt over 60%, the fiscal-budgetary discipline is an obligation, not an option,’ the Minister went on to say. According to him, exceeding this threshold is activating additional rules for the control of expenses and the gradual reduction of debt. Nazare recalls that Romania is still under the excessive budget deficit procedure, and the fiscal consolidation plan agreed upon with the European Commission involves clear limits for raising expenses. The deficit in 2026 has been forecast at 6% of the GDP, from 7.9% in 2025 and the negative record of 9.3% in 2024.

RAIL Bucharest’s acting government is today endorsing the contract of activity and performance of the Romanian Railway Company for the period 2026-2030. Trade unions have cautioned that without this document, the salaries of the employees would freeze. On Wednesday, the Executive endorsed the rail strategy for the following five years, a plan, which is aimed at modernizing the country’s railway network, severely affected by years of underfunding. The emphasis will be laid on stopping the infrastructure’s technical degradation, as last year alone, over 98 hundred kilometers of rail network, that is 72% of infrastructure, were in need of refurbishing. The strategies are also focusing on attracting a larger number of customers and increasing the transport of goods.

DRONE A naval drone was destroyed today by the Romanian Armed Forces by means of the onboard cannon of a Romanian F-16 aircraft near the Neptun Deep platform in the Black Sea, Defense Minister Radu Miruță announced on Facebook. He stated that he had been informed by the Coast Guard about the presence of the naval drone a few hundred meters from gas extraction operations at the Neptun Deep platform—located in the exclusive economic zone, 80 miles east of Constanța. A command cell was established within the Ministry of National Defence, which requested NATO authorization for the Romanian Armed Forces to take charge of the operation. Following an assessment and in coordination with the President of Romania, the decision was made to destroy the drone in order to protect the lives of the hundreds of people working on the platform and to secure critical infrastructure. Two Romanian F-16 fighter jets were scrambled with orders to engage. The minister further noted that the drone, which was carrying explosives, was safely destroyed.

SPORTS Romanian football side Universitatea Craiova plays at home today Ararat-Armenia Yerevan in the first leg of the Europa League play-offs. Should they fail to qualify for the Europa League group stage, Universitatea is nonetheless guaranteed a spot in the Conference League. Meanwhile, in tennis, Romanian player Sorana Cîrstea was defeated by American Jessica Pegula—the third seed—6-2, 4-6, 7-5 on Wednesday in the Round of 16 at the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio, a competition with over 7 million dollars in prize money.
