Security. Romanian President Nicușor Dan has convened a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defence for Thursday. According to the Presidential Administration, the meeting will focus primarily on analysing the security implications of incidents in the Black Sea and assessing measures to strengthen response capabilities aimed at protecting Romania’s territorial waters and critical maritime infrastructure. Ahead of the announcement, Nicușor Dan stated in a Facebook post that security in the Black Sea is essential not only for Romania and the other countries bordering the sea, but also for Europe as a whole and for international trade. The President recalled that, following his meeting last week in Brussels with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev, the North Atlantic Council met on Tuesday to assess the latest developments in the Black Sea and discuss concrete measures to strengthen security and protect shipping, trade and energy infrastructure. Romania has conveyed a clear message that it expects stronger support through additional counter-drone capabilities, surveillance, reconnaissance and expertise, as well as an enhanced and adapted NATO posture in the region, the head of state wrote on social media.

Government. Romania’s new Prime Minister, Luca Niculescu, had a telephone conversation on Wednesday with his counterpart from neighboring, Romanian-speaking Republic of Moldova, Vasile Tofan. During the conversation, the two agreed that Niculescu’s first official visit as Prime Minister would be to Chișinău, with the aim of revitalizing bilateral projects and identifying new opportunities for cooperation. At the same time, Luca Niculescu assured Vasile Tofan of the Romanian Government’s full support for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union. Meanwhile, the head of the Romanian Government, who was sworn into office on Tuesday, attended the official handover ceremonies for his ministers responsible for European Projects, Foreign Affairs, Education, Defense, and Culture. Romania’s new government consists of 17 ministries, 11 of which are headed by ministers from the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the country’s largest political force, while the remaining six are led by independents. However, the heated disputes between the former governing partners, the PSD and the National Liberal Party (PNL), indicate that the new Prime Minister will have to govern with the support of a minority in Parliament. Luca Niculescu has promised to revive the economy and create new jobs.

Danube. The flow of the Danube River remains almost three times lower than the seasonal average. At the point where it enters Romania, the flow is approximately 1,300 cubic metres per second and is expected to remain stable until October 24. Due to the extremely low water flow, the country is facing a prolonged energy crisis, with both reactors at the nuclear power plant, which normally supplies 20% of the country’s electricity needs, shut down. At the same time, navigation has been suspended along most of the Romanian stretch of the river, causing substantial economic losses. Farmers are unable to transport their produce along the Danube or are facing irrigation restrictions, while wildlife and vegetation are also suffering.

EPP. Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureşan (PNL) was re-elected on Tuesday evening as vice-chair of the European People’s Party group, the largest and most influential group in the European Parliament. ‘I would like to thank my colleagues who have, for the fourth time in a row, given me their vote and their trust,’ Mureşan posted on social media. He added that the result is important not only for himself, but also for Romania, which will continue to have a strong voice at the table where the EPP sets its priorities and positions. ‘I have been vice-chair of the group for seven years and, throughout this time, I have used this position to defend Romania’s interests,’ said Siegfried Mureşan, who promised that, during his new term, he would continue to put Bucharest’s priorities on the agenda of the largest political group in the European Parliament, whilst also taking into account, in equal measure, the priorities of his colleagues from other Member States.

Tennis. Czech tennis player Sara Bejlek will face Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea today in the round of 16 of the WTA 500 tournament in Ningbo, China, which offers more than $1.2 million in total prize money. The 36-year-old Romanian, ranked 17th in the WTA standings, is the eighth seed at Ningbo. She defeated Sara Bejlek earlier this year in the first round of the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament, winning 6-1, 7-6. (MI)
