RADIO Radio Romania is a landmark for the Romanian society, Romanian President Nicusor Dan said on the 98th anniversary of the Romanian public Radio. According to him, Radio Romania continues to bring balance, professionalism and verified information in an increasingly restless media landscape. On this occasion, Prime Minister Luca Niculescu has said, quote: “for almost a century, the public radio has managed to bring together people from all over the country and create bridges towards the entire world.” The president of the Romanian Academy, Marius Andruh, has also conveyed messages of congratulation. He has referred to the common cultural destiny of the two institutions, but also to the common way towards the education of the listeners, the promotion of culture and the preservation of the national identity.
DAY Radio Romania celebrated 98 years since its first broadcast on November 1. The first transmission on November 1, 1928, by the Society of Radiotelephonic Broadcasting, as it was called back then, was marked on Friday through a concert given by the National Radio Orchestra, an ensemble whose history goes back to the early days of the public radio. Back in 1928, in order to respond to the mission of cultural promotion the public radio had assumed, the Radio Orchestra was established. Later it changed its name into the National Radio Orchestra. Also on this occasion, the news agency RADOR declared a day of Open Doors for students in journalism over October 26 and 28. Radio Romania Music Awards are to take place on Monday, an event, which is expected to bring together the best pop and rock singers in Romania now.
PARLIAMENT The Chamber of Deputies in Bucharest has invited the country’s Prime Minister, Luca Niculescu, to Parliament next week for the so-called, ‘the Prime Minister’s Hour’ upon a request from the AUR group. Representatives of this opposition nationalist group would like the Prime Minister to present the situation of budgetary execution, debts and due payments, as well as the measures to curb the budget deficit. Several initiatives are in the legislative circuit now such as that aimed at banning the access to social media and online programmes of children under 15. MPs are also expected to hold debates over a legislative initiative under which investment projects on natural gas storage may become of national importance. The Senate is expected to vote on another initiative, on the implementation of programmes by the National Cybersecurity Directorate aimed at identifying vulnerabilities in the IT systems operated by public institutions. Under the aforementioned initiative, identifying any security breaches is to be rewarded.
TOURISM BBC World News is to broadcast 3 tourism promotional spots about Romania in November. The campaign has been carried out by the Romanian Ministry of the Economy jointly with the British director, Charlie Ottley, producer of the documentaries ’Wild Carpathia’ and ‘Flavours of Romania’ which have brought to the attention of the international public the country’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. All the 20 items broadcast by the BBC are promoting the nature, cultural heritage and local identity in Transylvania. The campaign is aimed at promoting Romania as a tourist destination in all the four seasons. In the meantime, over November 3 and 5, Romania is participating in the International Travel Fair in London, with a national stand including 35 exhibitors.
TAX The 4.6 Euros tax for packages with values below 150 Euros coming to Romania from outside the European Union was eliminated starting November 1st. The measure has been adopted by the government in order to bring the national legislation in line with the new European legislation. The aforementioned tax used to cause a series of delays in package delivery and processing. Its elimination, however, doesn’t mean that there aren’t other costs involved. As of November the 1st a new package of regulations is being applied in the entire community area, which includes a 3 Euro tax on every imported package, to which a tax of 2 Euros is being added for every item processed. So, ordering several small and cheap items in the same package could significantly raise the total costs. The advantage is that all these new costs are now being integrated in the final price displayed on the online platforms.
