Holocaust. President Nicuşor Dan said on Thursday that, in a historical context marked by increasingly heightened tensions and the tendency to shift responsibility for personal or social failures onto others, it is essential to combat, by all means, anti-Semitic, xenophobic and hate speech. He attended a ceremony in Bucharest marking the National Holocaust Remembrance Day in Romania. This Day offers us an opportunity to remember those experiences and urges us to be vigilant in the face of expressions of hatred, not to fall into the trap of silence or indifference, said the Elie Wiesel National Institute for Holocaust Studies in Romania. According to the Institute, in the middle of the last century, over 300,000 Jews of Romanian and Ukrainian origin, victims of the regime led by Romanian Marshal Ion Antonescu, were deported and died of bullets, cold, hunger and disease. Also, 11,000 Roma were also exterminated as a result of a racial policy.
Agriculture. Romania is to receive at least 16.6 billion euros under the future Common Agricultural Policy, with the possibility of adding to this from national allocations, making it the sixth largest beneficiary of Common Agricultural Policy funding in the European Union, said the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen on Thursday, at the AGRI4FUTURE Romania – Objective 2035 conference held in Bucharest by the Romanian Farmers’ Club. This provides farmers with predictability and stability, solid and guaranteed support for their incomes at a time when other sectors are facing uncertainties, the European official added. The conference was also attended by the Romanian Minister of Agriculture, Florin Barbu. On a visit to Bucharest, Christophe Hansen was received on Wednesday by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, who stressed the need to consolidate the production and processing of agricultural products in Romania.
Resolution. The European Parliament on Thursday passed a draft resolution condemning recent breaches of European Union and NATO airspace attributed to Russia, Radio Romania correspondent in Strasbourg said. The majority of MEPs believe that these incidents, which targeted Poland, Romania, Estonia, Germany, Denmark and Belgium, are not accidental, and the response must be firm. The majority of European parliamentarians demand the rapid adoption of a 19th much harsher package of sanctions against Moscow and the use of all resources generated by seized Russian assets, in order to support Ukraine.
Nobel. Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday “for his impressive and visionary work that, amidst apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art,” the Swedish Academy in Stockholm said in a statement. Last year, the Nobel Prize in Literature went to South Korean writer Han Kang “for her intensely poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.” Earlier this week, the Swedish Academy announced the Nobel Prizes in Physics, Medicine and Chemistry. This year’s Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, and the winner of the Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced on Monday. The awards will be presented at a special ceremony on December 10.
Weather. The weather is improving in Romania after on Wednesday, parts of the country were under a red code alert for heavy rain caused by a cyclone formed in the Mediterranean Sea. The heavy rains and strong winds caused damages to households, roads and electrical networks. Emergency teams were dispatched to rescue people in difficulty and to remove the effects of the severe weather. Emergency call centres received a huge amount of calls from the affected areas, an indication of the strong impact felt by the population.
