MOTIONS The four censure motions submitted on Wednesday night by the Alliance for the Union of the Romanians (AUR, the ultra-nationalist, populist opposition) against the coalition government headed by the Liberal Ilie Bolojan, are today being presented before Parliament. On Sunday, the aforementioned documents will be debated upon and submitted to voting. The signatories are criticizing both the content of the four bills for which the government assumed responsibility on Monday as well as the ways in which the government wants to endorse them. Among the decisions criticized is keeping the minimum tax on turnover, which would affect the small enterprises and levying higher taxes on stock exchange deals. The signatories are also criticizing the corporate governance bill, which, in their opinion, would disadvantage the Romanian companies. The AUR hasn’t tabled a censure motion in the case of the bill on reducing the pensions of the magistrates and raising their retirement age.
VISIT Romanian president, Nicusor Dan, on Wednesday night received the president of the European Council, Antonio Costa. The EU official has highlighted Romania’s role in the European security. “All Europeans know very well that our security depends on security on our Eastern border. Romania is a key pillar of the European security, so we will all stand for your security, as we very well know that our security depends on Romanian security,” the EU official went on to say. Costa is expected to pay visits to most of EU members until September 19. This tour of the EU capitals will allow him to listen to the opinions of the heads of state and government on the situation in the Union and prepare the terrain for the future European Councils and international summits.

On Tuesday, September 9th, the Romanians are playing Cyprus in Group H of the qualifiers for the World Cup next year in Canada, the United States and Mexico. The group’s leader is Bosnia with 9 points followed by Austria and Romania with 6, Cyprus with 3 and San Marino with no points. Romania’s last participation in a final world tour was in France in 1998.
PROTESTS Employees of Romania’s Education System are carrying on their protests against the social and payment policies of the incumbent Romanian government. Trade union leaders have announced the teachers are going to boycott the beginning of the new school year, disgruntled, among other things, with the increased number of working hours and students in a classroom as well as by school mergers. Education Minister, Daniel David, has voiced confidence though that students will be received in schools on Monday, September 8, although some boycotting activities can occur in some units. He called on headmasters to inform the parents whether they are staging ceremonies on welcoming students back to school at the beginning of a new year.
TOUR The two Romanian artists who in December 2024 set the first World GUINNESS record for a Romanian professional music project in Antarctica, are going to go around the globe for the third time in three consecutive years with a fresh concert tour. Over September 5th and October 1st, violinist Diana Jipa and pianist Stefan Doniga will be giving concerts in Geneva, in Switzerland, Vienna, Austria, Nairobi, Kenya, Brisbane, Australia and New York, in the USA. The two musicians will be tackling major themes for the entire culture and universal history to underline the fact that art is first and foremost an expression of the realities and truth of mankind. The aforementioned tour this year has been entitled MUSICA PROHIBITA and is marking 80 years since the end of the Holocaust and WWII. The concerts are symbolically given only in cities, which are housing headquarters of the United Nations, in token of respect for this international institution, which is protecting human rights.
