Sorana Cîrstea and Jaqueline Cristian have qualified for the second round of the WTA 1000 tennis tournament in Indian Wells. On Wednesday, Sorana beat the German player Tatjana Maria 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Jaqueline also won in three sets against the Indonesian athlete Janice Tjen 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. After qualifying for the second round, the two Romanian athletes secured USD 36,110 and 35 WTA points. The third Romanian player in the first round of the California competition, Elena Gabriela Ruse, was defeated by Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5, 6-2.
The Romanian Cup final in women’s volleyball will be played between Volei Alba Blaj and Dinamo Bucharest. The Transylvanian team qualified at the expense of CSO Voluntari, which it defeated on Wednesday, 3-1 at home, in the second leg of the semi-final. In the first round, Alba Blaj had won 3-2 away from home. In the other semi-final, Dinamo Wednesday defeated (3-1) another Bucharest team, CSM, after having also won the first leg, 3-0. Volei Alba Blaj will play its 7th final in history, after winning the trophy in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2025. Dinamo has two Romanian Cup trophies in its history, won in 2010 and 2012, and in 2021 it lost the final to the team from Blaj.
Universitatea Cluj, FC Argeș and Universitatea Craiova qualified for the semi-finals of the Romanian Football Cup. In the quarter-finals on Tuesday, the Cluj team defeated Hermannstadt 2-1 at home. In the first game of the day on Wednesday, in Mioveni FC Argeș defeated the second tier team Gloria Bistrița, 3-2 after extra time. The match pitting Universitatea Craiova against CFR Cluj, played in Craiova, also ended 3-1 after overtime. The last quarter-final Thursday is Dinamo Bucharest vs second-league team Metalul Buzău.
