This weekend, the attention of Romanian sports fans is focused on handball and football.

On Thursday, Universitatea Craiova secured their first point in the current season of the European football competition UEFA Conference League. The Romanian champions drew 1–1 in their home match against the Spanish side Getafe, during the opening round of the main group stage. Craiova scored first on 59 minutes thanks to the Palestinian player Assad Al Hamlawi’s well-placed shot from outside the penalty area. The Spanish team’s equaliser was scored by the Serbian player Nemanja Gudelj on 81 minutes. It was a balanced match, and the result was a fair reflection of the play. Universitatea will play their next match away from home, against the champions of Andorra, Inter d’Escaldes, next Thursday.
Also in football, the 12th round of the Romanian Superliga takes place this weekend. After 2 matches on Friday, Oțelul Galați versus Csikszereda, and Dinamo Bucharest against FC Botoșani, on Saturday Petrolul take on Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe in Ploiești, and Rapid play Corvinul Hunedoara in Bucharest. On Sunday, UTA face CFR Cluj in Arad, while in Craiova, Universitatea take on Farul Constanța. The last two matches of the round take place on Monday: Universitatea Cluj versus FC Argeș, and FC Voluntari versus FCSB. Dinamo leads the standings with 26 points, followed by Rapid with 24 and Craiova with 23.
This weekend features another round of the Women’s EHF Champions League. The first Romanian team to play is Gloria Bistrița. The Romanian champions play the Norwegian side Storhamar on Saturday. Both teams are tied on points in Group B, sitting in 4th and 5th place. After 5 rounds, each side has 3 wins and 2 losses, though the Scandinavian team holds a better goal difference.
In Group A, on Sunday, CSM Bucharest will also play at home, facing another Norwegian team, Sola. In the standings, the Romanians hold 4th place, while the Nordic side sits in 7th. CSM has won 3 matches and lost 2 so far, whereas Sola has been defeated in all 5 rounds. (AMP)
