In Prague, the World Figure Skating Championships are currently underway. Romania’s only representative, Julia Sauter, is set to compete in the free program this Friday. She secured her qualification after placing 23rd in the short program. Last year, at the World Championships in Boston, the Corona Brașov athlete finished in 19th place, which stands as the best result ever achieved by a Romanian representative at the World Figure Skating Championships.
Staying on the ice but moving to hockey, Romanian teams have started on the wrong foot in the semifinals of the Erste League regional competition. In Brașov, Corona lost 4-0 to Budapest Jégkorong Akadémia, while in Remetea, ACSH Gheorgheni fell 3-4 to the Miskolc-based side, Jegesmedvék. The second matches of the series take place this Thursday, also in Romania, as the semifinals are played under a “best-of-seven” format.
Turning to basketball, the men’s team U-BT Cluj-Napoca has defeated the Slovenian formation Olimpija Ljubljana with a score of 98-95. The game took place at the BT Arena and counted toward the Top 8 phase of the men’s ABA League competition. The return leg is scheduled for Saturday in Ljubljana. In the standings, the Romanian champions sit 6th with 32 points, level with Olimpija in 5th. Dubai Basketball from the United Arab Emirates and Partizan Belgrade from Serbia, both with 38 points.
A major upset has occurred in the Romanian Women’s Handball Cup. SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea has qualified for the Final Four tournament after securing a 32-27 away victory on Wednesday against the trophy holders, CSM Bucharest. The capital city side, who also hold the Romanian national title, are now in danger of missing both domestic objectives this season. This follows the loss of their first-place position in the championship after a home defeat against Gloria Bistrița last week. However, CSM remains qualified for the quarterfinals of the Champions League. (VP)
