Let’s begin with swimming. Romania won five medals at the European Junior Swimming Championships hosted by Šamorín, in Slovakia. Two of them are gold, won by Robert Badea in the 400 m individual medley race, and Daria Silișteanu, in the 100 m backstroke; one silver, again from Badea in the 200 m individual medley; and two bronze, from Daria Silișteanu in the 50 m backstroke and Claudia Prisecariu in the 200 m backstroke.
To Wimbledon next for the third Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year. In the women’s doubles, Sorana Cîrstea and Ana Kalinskaia qualified for the quarterfinals. They defeated the all-Russian pair, Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider, seeded fifth, in three sets 4-6, 7-6, 6-1. Cîrstea and her doubles partner thus won 87,000 pounds and 430 WTA points. They will next face the fourth seeds Su-wei Hsieh of Taiwan and Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.
It’s news from rugby next. Romania’s national rugby side began their training tournament in South America with a defeat. They lost on Saturday to Chile 40-16. Romania’s scorers were Toni Maftei, Tudor Boldor and Alin Conache. Romania will next face Uruguay on 12th July in Montevideo and Argentina on 18th July in Buenos Aires.
In cycling, the Sibiu Cycling Tour, now in its 15th year, was won by the American road cyclist Matthew Riccitello. The last leg of the competition was an individual time trial that took place on Sunday in the historic centre of Sibiu and was won by Britain’s Callum Thornley. The highest ranked Romanian cyclist was Denis Piciu, who finished in 22nd place, 8 minutes and 34 seconds behind the winner.
Let’s end with news from football. The new season got under way on Saturday with the Romanian Super Cup final between the trophy holders FCSB and the winners of the Romanian Cup, CFR Cluj. FCSB won the match 2-1, thanks to the goals scored by Dennis Politic 48 minutes into the match and Risto Radunović in added time. Alin Fică scored for CFR Cluj on minute 65. On Wednesday, FCSB will play their first match in the Champions League qualifiers, at home, against the Andorran champions Inter Club d’Escaldes. CFR Cluj will play away against the Hungarian side Paks in the first Europa League qualifying round. A new edition of the Romanian Super League will get under way at the end of the week.
