Romanian tennis player Dan Alexandru Tomescu has won the ITF tournament hosted by Larnaca, Cyprus, offering 15,000 USD in total prizes. Seeded 4th in the competition, Tomescu won the final against second-seed Lucas Gerch of Germany, 6-3, 6-4.
Four Romanian tennis players are this week seeded in the main draw at the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami. Returning to court after her doping ban was overturned, Simona Halep will take on Paula Badosa of Spain in the opening round, and, in the event of a win, will play world no. 2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in the second round. Also in the first round, Ana Bogdan will take on Katerina Siniakova of Czechia, while Jaqueline Cristian will take on Diane Parry of France. Seeded 19th in the women’s singles, Sorana Cîrstea has been drawn in the second round.
Romania’s rugby team finished 4th the 2024 edition of Rugby Europe Championship, the second-tier European competition after the Six Nations Championship. “The Oaks” lost 40-33 to Spain in the bronze final. Romania scored five tries – two each for Marius Simionescu and Jason Tomane and Adrian Mitu once. The competition was won by Georgia, which defeated Portugal 36-10 in the gold final.
This weekend saw matches counting towards the first round of the Romanian Football Superleague group phase. In Group 1, on Friday, Farul Constanța won 2-1 against Rapid Bucharest. On Saturday, Universitatea Craiova won 2-1 against CFR Cluj. On Sunday, FCSB won 2-1 against Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe. FCSB now tops the league tables 7 points ahead of the teams in 2nd and 3rd place, Universitatea Craiova and Rapid, respectively. In Group 2, on Friday, Universitatea Cluj won 3-0 against FC Botoșani. On Saturday, Oțelul Galați won 1-0 against Poli Iași, and on Sunday, FC Hermannstadt won 3-0 against Dinamo Bucharest. On Monday, UTA Arad is playing FC Voluntari while Petrolul Ploiești will go up against FC U Craiova. (VP)
