Ana Maria Barbosu became the bronze medalist in the individual all round event of the European Gymnastics Championship in Leipzig, Germany, on Thursday. The other athlete representing Romania in the competition, Denisa Golgotă, who recently came back to competitions after a long recess, has ranked only seventh.
Italian Manila Esposito is the new European champion, while the silver medal went to Spanish gymnast Alba Petisco. Romania hadn’t obtained a European medal in the individual all round since 2013, when Larisa Iordache stepped onto the podium’s second step.
Also on Thursday seven Romanian crews qualified for the finals of the European Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
In the women’s pair, Simona Radiş and Magdalena Rusu emerged as winners of Heat 1 with a European record. Also a European record was set by Romania’s male four made up of Ştefan Berariu, Sergiu Bejan, Andrei Mândrilă and Ciprian Tudosă.
Romania’s double scull with Andrada Moroşanu and Mariana Dumitru has also qualified after coming second in the aforementioned contest.
The Romanian women’s four, made up of Adriana Adam, Maria Lehaci, Ancuţa Bodnar and Amalia Bereş also came second in the qualifiers.
Another qualified crew is Romania’s female quadruple scull, made up of Emanuela Ciotău, Cristina Drugă, Mădălina Cornea and Patricia Cireş in spite of coming third in Heat 2.
Romania’s both male and female eights have also qualified for the finals, with a first position won by the girls and a third place by the boys. Four other crews have qualified for the semis.
Romania’s football champions FCSB, has hired international Denis Alibec, from Farul Constanţa. Alibec also played for FCSB between 2017 and 2018. The 34 years old footballer has also won 43 caps for Romania’s national side for which he scored six times. Alibec has also been selected for the games the national side will be playing in June against Austria and Cyprus.
