The month of October ushered in a series of extreme weather phenomena in Romania, a country, which was hit by heavy downpours and cold weather. Meteorologists and hydrologists issued code yellow, orange and even red alerts for the country’s southern regions, which happened to bear the brunt of the latest cold wave

A meteorological alert of extremely cold weather, heavy rainfalls and gale force wind was also issued. In some parts of the country, the quantities of water exceeded 70l/sq, while winds blew with speeds up to 70 km/h.

Temperatures dropped significantly and, according to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the bad weather affected 49 towns and villages in 14 counties.  Intervention teams took action to pump water out of households, yards and basements, to remove building parts and fallen trees from the roads. 141 vehicles have been damaged, 18 of them in capital Bucharest alone. Several roads were affected by the heavy rainfalls and road traffic disrupted on some national and county roads. A code orange alert was issued for Bucharest and its surroundings and specialized intervention teams had no less than 350 interventions reported.

Hundreds of trees have been broken by the gale force wind, which also ripped through buildings tearing off roofs and other construction elements. Electricity cables have been broken, streets flooded, and vehicles damaged by the strong winds.

Trees fell on moving vehicles and one person was wounded. The National Airport Company announced that, because of the strong wind in the area, two planes, which were preparing to touch down on the Henry Coanda Airport in Bucharest had to be redirected.

Several Black Sea ports have been closed down. After two days of milder weather, a new cold wave is expected with rainfalls and wind, meteorologists say.

According to the National Meteorology Agency, rain showers are expected all over the country, with the largest quantities of water per square meter in the south and south-east. In Eastern Carpathians, at altitudes over 17 hundred meters, snowfalls and blizzards are expected. Gale force winds are expected in some areas in the south, east and in the mountains. According to the latest weather reports, the bad weather will last until Wednesday in most of the regions with highs ranging between 12 and 18 degrees Celsius and lows between 3 and 12 degrees. Temperatures are expected to get back to normal on Thursday.
