How do we protect ourselves from cyber-attacks?

Romanian authorities have prepared a set of rules to counter cyber-attacks

Cyber security risks are increasingly high, and emerging technologies are elements that increase exposure, stated the deputy director of the National Cyber Security Directorate, Gabriel Dinu, at the 6th “Digital Romania Forum”. He stressed that cyber security is needed for essential and important infrastructures.

Gabriel Dinu believes that already we can no longer talk about security alone. “We have to take more and more into account and understand concepts of resilience, to understand the need that certain services and systems must have the ability to withstand cyber security attacks, to have continuity of operation, considering that they are already an integral part of our lives, and increasingly so”, pointed out Gabriel Dinu.

Authorities make a series of recommendations to reduce the risk posed by incidents in the online environment. The National Cyber Security Directorate, together with the Police and the Romanian Association of Banks, launched a series of rules that can form security reflexes regarding personal data. During the holidays, specialists draw attention to the way in which a travel agency is chosen or the use of electronic devices and even online behavior.

In case of suspected online fraud, it should be reported immediately. Also, public wi-fi networks should be used with caution. Last but not least, it is important not to post details about vacations on the Internet.

Cezar Bărbuceanu, a policy, strategy and cooperation expert in the field of cyber security with the National Cyber Security Directorate, stated:

We’ve drawn up a set of nine rules, including checking websites before booking – users should make sure the websites they’re booking from are legitimate, possibly see the website’s contact and call, to check the legitimacy of the site before entering their data, considering that in this period the attackers are as cautious as possible in the announcements they make and the sites they build look as legitimate as possible to deceive the users. Our recommendation is to choose a reliable travel agency, when planning your vacation; it is important to choose a travel agency with a good reputation. One can ask for recommendations from friends, family or can search the internet for agencies with positive reviews.

Cezar Bărbuceanu specified that the risks in the case of cyber insecurity are the loss or theft of personal or authentication data, as well as bank data, and, subsequently, a financial fraud may occur. (MI)
