Nearly 40% of Romanians believe the current domestic political system is so flawed that it should be completely replaced, regardless of the means. According to an opinion poll conducted by the Political Rating Agency (ARP) over April 1-10, 30% say profound changes are needed, but only through democratic means, while 16.5% believe the political system has problems but can be improved gradually. Only just over 3% of Romanians believe that the political system in Romania functions well and does not need major changes. Regarding the stability of the government, nearly half of those surveyed anticipate a breakup of the current four-party coalition before the scheduled deadline for the rotation of Prime Ministers in April 2027. Once Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan reaches the end his mandate, the government is set to have a new leader from the ranks of the Social Democrats starting next spring, based on a political agreement. In just a few days, specifically on April 20, the Social-Democrats are due to meet to decide whether or not to withdraw from the coalition, dissatisfied with how the coalition is functioning. According to the poll conducted by the Political Rating Agency, over a quarter of Romanians believe, however, that all politicians are equally responsible for the scandals between PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR.

In terms of their daily lives, the Political Rating Agency’s research reveals that the majority of Romanians are strongly affected by price increases and fear an impact of the war in Iran, especially a fuel crisis. Asked if they are “in favor” or “against” Bucharest’s decision to allow US military forces to deploy equipment and troops in Romania in the context of the war in the Middle East, over 32% declared themselves against and about 19% in favor. Nearly 36% of those interviewed did not express an opinion. On the same topic, another opinion poll conducted by Avangarde reveals that 29% of Romanians support Romania’s alignment with the USA in the Iran conflict, regardless of what other European countries say, while 35% do not agree with this approach. The survey also shows that 53% of Romanians believe Romania’s decision to allow American refueling planes to use bases on national territory was correct, whereas 35% consider it to be wrong. Regarding the economic impact of the conflict in Iran, 43 out of 100 Romanians believe it will be significant, and 40% believe the war in Iran may have an impact on energy prices and trade. 21% also say they do not have much confidence in the available information. Finally, nearly half of those interviewed believe that Romania should focus on diplomacy, international cooperation and respect for international law in addressing the conflict in Iran. (VP)
