Romania – USA diplomatic meeting
During a two-day visit to Washington, the Romanian Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, held talks with her American counterpart, Marco Rubio.

Strengthening the strategic partnership between Romania and the USA and the identification of opportunities for its expansion were the main topics of the political-diplomatic talks held in Washington by the Romanian Foreign Minister, Oana Țoiu, with the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. It is the first bilateral meeting of the two officials, which took place at the invitation of the US Secretary of State, following the joint discussion formats within the UN high-level meeting. Oana Țoiu and Marco Rubio addressed topics related to defense, security, energy and economy, as well as the positive influence that the two countries can have in the region. Among other things, the Romanian official stressed the strategic importance of the Black Sea region for Euro-Atlantic security and the good collaboration between Romania and the United States for the security of NATO’s Eastern Flank, a Foreign Ministry press release reads. In this context, the Romanian official highlighted the crucial role of the American military presence on Romanian territory, illustrated by the strategic importance of the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base (southeast), an essential pillar for the deterrence and defense posture of the Eastern Flank.
Talks also focused on strengthening economic cooperation and joint investments in key sectors, as well as on the consolidated role of Romanian companies present in the USA. Special attention was paid to energy projects – fundamental initiatives for the energy security of Romania and the region, while emphasizing the importance of developing private partnerships in high-tech sectors. The two officials discussed opportunities for collaboration in areas such as IT, cybersecurity, innovation and AI, where the USA and Romania can develop successful projects. The Visa Waiver Program was also addressed, with the Romanian official highlighting the advantages of cooperation in the field of border security, as well as in tourism.
The US Secretary of State thanked Romania for the quality of bilateral relations and both officials hailed the role of the partnership in ensuring security on the Eastern Flank and in strengthening the allied defense and deterrence posture in the Black Sea region. Marco Rubio also expressed the USA’s interest in developing cooperation with Romania in the economic and energy fields.
A distinct point of the discussion was the role of the Romanian community in the USA, an essential bridge between the two societies and an active factor in strengthening bilateral relations. The two officials stressed the importance of steps to boost bilateral contacts in the coming period, including at high level. They also discussed president Nicuşor Dan’s visit to the United States, which could take place in the first quarter of next year and, during which he is expected to meet with President Donald Trump.
