“We need to strengthen the strategic partnership between Romania and the United States,” President Nicuşor Dan wrote on X following his meeting on Monday with the U.S. Secretary of the Army Daniel P. Driscoll. Bucharest is prepared to invest more in its own security and that of the North Atlantic Alliance – noted the head of state, also stressing that Romania remains the most reliable partner and ally of the U.S. in the Black Sea region, where challenges and risks are on the rise, affecting Euro-Atlantic security.
Foreign Minister Oana Ţoiu also met with the U.S. official and highlighted the fact that the bilateral strategic partnership remains essential to Romania’s security, calling for an acceleration of joint investments. “We addressed issues of great importance to Romania’s security, ranging from the significance of the U.S. military presence in the country for strengthening the Eastern Flank to the need for close cooperation in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine,” Oana Țoiu explained. She briefed Daniel P. Driscoll on the details of the most recent incident—from late last week—when a Russian drone violated Romanian airspace and, in an unprecedented event, fragments fell into a populated area, requiring the intervention of Romanian specialists to detonate the explosive payload.
Beyond the military aspect, the meeting between the Romanian foreign minister and the U.S. Secretary of the Army also addressed the acceleration of joint investments and the growth of both countries’ economies, including through the defence industry, where there is significant potential for cooperation. Specifically, Defence Minister Radu Miruţă and U.S. Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll signed a letter of intent for cooperation in the field of drones and counter-drone systems. “Romania becomes the second country in the world, after the United Kingdom, with real-time access to the Counter-UAS Marketplace—a modern tool that provides us with rapid access to over 1,600 anti-drone solutions and significantly shortens response and procurement times. On the Eastern Flank, time makes the difference. And we choose to be prepared,” Minister Miruță stated on his Facebook page.
“The partnership with the United States is not merely a symbol. It is a real guarantee of security. And Romania is not merely a beneficiary of security. It is a serious partner that contributes, delivers, and provides predictability. A commitment is a commitment, no matter how much time has passed since it was signed. And Romania honours its commitments,” the Minister of National Defence added. He assured that Romania remains a firm supporter of strengthening the transatlantic relationship. (MI)
