World leaders have reacted to the decisive victories won by the U.S. Democrats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections. For the international press, it comes as no surprise that some of them, who had been criticized by Republican President Donald Trump, welcomed the Democratic Party’s results. In Bucharest, while across the Atlantic the Americans’ voting choices had already become clear, President Nicușor Dan was receiving Elbridge Colby, the U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy.

This prompted the Romanian head of state to declare on Facebook: “I thanked Elbridge Colby and the entire U.S. Administration for their significant contribution to Romania’s security, and I reiterated that our country remains fully committed to the Strategic Partnership with the United States of America, as an indispensable and reliable ally, contributing to regional deterrence and the projection of U.S. power in the Black Sea region and beyond.” According to Nicuşor Dan, the Black Sea is currently one of the most dangerous and unstable maritime regions, and Romania, which is making substantial efforts to manage the risks posed by this security context, relies on the continued commitment of the United States and its allies.

In an interview with a television station, Romania’s ambassador to Washington, Andrei Muraru, noted that Romania has supporters in both the Republican and Democratic camps, regardless of the political makeup of the U.S. Congress. Bucharest, the diplomat explained, wants a strengthened U.S. military presence on NATO’s eastern flank, particularly in the south, with implications that go beyond security, affecting Romania’s prosperity, energy prices, and attractiveness to investors.

The Liberal MEP Siegfried Mureşan believes that Romania must strengthen its partnership with the United States both now and in the future, which means cooperating with the administration in office until 2029 and with the new majority in Congress. In 2028, says Siegfried Mureşan, Americans will elect a new president, whether Democrat or Republican. Donald Trump can no longer run for office. Romania’s interests must be supported through a partnership that remains strong beyond the term of a single leader and political changes in Washington. Bucharest must work effectively with both Democrats and Republicans, agrees the Social Democratic Member of the European Parliament Victor Negrescu, who believes that the Strategic Partnership with the United States must remain above electoral cycles.
