Romania’s Foreign Minister Oana Ţoiu paid a visit to Kyiv on Thursday, where she met with president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and her counterpart Andrii Sybiha. Among the topics discussed were ongoing joint projects, the participation of Romanian companies in the reconstruction of Ukraine, the development of military cooperation and the rights of minorities. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel, thanking Romania for its military, political and logistics assistance and for its contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses, given that Bucharest donated a Patriot system to Kyiv in 2024. He also welcomed the relatively recent adoption by Parliament of the law that allows the shooting down of drones that enter Romanian airspace.
“We are building a strategic partnership between Romania and Ukraine, for peace, strong democracies and prosperity. (…) Ukraine is fighting courageously for the security and freedom of Romania and the whole of Europe. It is a war that Ukraine did not want, but which it is fighting today with determination in the name of the values that Romania also stands for – freedom, sovereignty and independence”, Oana Ţoiu wrote on Facebook. She pointed out that it is in Romania’s direct interest that a peace in Ukraine be just and lasting, in order to ensure the independence, integrity and the European path of the neighboring state, but also the stability and security of the entire region.
On the sidelines of her meeting with Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, Oana Ţoiu encouraged Ukraine to continue its efforts for the credible, predictable and comprehensive implementation of reforms required for EU accession. The Romanian official recalled that, since the start of Russia’s war of aggression, Romania has been a firm supporter of Ukraine. She also outlined the steps taken by Romanian authorities in support of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, with special emphasis on investments in the development of cross-border infrastructure. These extensive projects, Oana Ţoiu argues, will also play a fundamental role in Romania’s active participation in the reconstruction of Ukraine, as well as in its economic development and increasing its regional resilience. In addition to immediate priorities, Romania’s diplomacy chief discussed with her counterpart the long-term development prospects of the bilateral relationship, including by raising it to the level of Strategic Partnership. In this context, Oana Țoiu stressed the fundamental importance of protecting the rights of national minorities, including educational, religious rights and the right to free association. Oana Țoiu mentioned the unique contribution of ethnic Romanians in Ukraine and Ukrainians in Romania to strengthening ties between the two countries, as well as to ensuring a safe and prosperous European future.
