The Romanian head of state, Nicușor Dan, was a guest on a Radio Romania News and Current Affairs program, during which a series of topics related to the country’s domestic and foreign policy were discussed. In the context of his participation in the first meeting of the Board of Peace, organized in Washington by the US leader Donald Trump, President Dan explained what motivated him to attend this event.

“Participating as an observer in the first meeting of the Board of Peace is in Romania’s interest,” argued the head of state. He mentioned that he made this decision after several days of discussions with the American side, during which he requested clarification on what a state that is not a member but agrees with the direction of this organization can do. Nicușor Dan also stated that this first meeting will focus exclusively on the situation in the Gaza Strip.

“We are interested in an international context of peace in all regions of the globe. We are very interested in maintaining our privileged relationship with the United States of America, which is an important pillar of security for Romania. We are participating in this initiative by the United States, which currently aims to stabilise an area, the Middle East, which is important to the global economy.”

Regarding domestic policy, President Nicuşor Dan stated that he sees no reason why the current governing coalition (formed by the PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR) should cease to function. He said he would like the leaders of the coalition parties to refrain from criticising each other, for discussions to be more constructive, and for what has been agreed to remain agreed. On the other hand, the Bucharest leader said that we are doing better than we could have expected. According to him, Romania is maintaining a pro-Western direction, has reduced its deficit, and there is no longer any concern on the part of investors and rating agencies.

During the interview on Radio Romania News and Current Affairs, Nicușor Dan announced that he will soon make a decision regarding the appointment of the directors of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE), specifying that the discussions he has had so far with the coalition parties have been about the profile of the future heads of the secret services. According to the Romanian president, SRI and SIE must be headed by mature individuals capable of leading such institutions.

The head of state also said that in March there will be 40-50 recalls and appointments of new Romanian ambassadors, noting that this will be a significant change in the field. Regarding the profile of the future ambassadors, Nicuşor Dan said that Romanian diplomacy is professional in the classical sense, but there is also a major gap in the area of economic diplomacy.

The president added that Romania has areas of excellence in technology and IT, the pharmaceutical industry, and retail, but that these areas have not benefited from a coherent external promotion strategy. (MI)
