Romania will host US military forces and equipment, in the context of the conflict in the Middle East, after Romania’s Parliament approved the decision of the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) regarding their temporary deployment in Romania. “Romanians have no reason to worry, the equipment that will be deployed in our country by the United States at the bases in Mihail Kogălniceanu and Câmpia Turzii is defensive”, assured President Nicușor Dan. The head of state announced after the CSAT meeting that it concerns aerial refuelers and satellite communications equipment.

Nicuşor Dan: “The equipment consists of refueling planes, some monitoring equipment and some satellite communications equipment, the latter in correlation with the Deveselu shield. This equipment is defensive and I emphasize that it is not equipped with actual weapons. The equipment will be deployed based on the Partnership Agreement between Romania and the United States and it is a collaboration between Romania and the United States similar, these days, to a collaboration that other NATO countries have. I emphasize that it is about some equipment that increases Romania’s security, so I assure Romanians that they have no reason to worry, their country is a safe country, even safer.”

The deployment of American military equipment and forces is to be carried out for a limited period of time, 90 days, at the bases in Mihail Kogălniceanu (Constanța County, south) and Câmpia Turzii (Cluj County, north-west), where approximately 500 American soldiers will also be stationed. The approval of the United States’ request is a natural and necessary gesture, the vote being a proof of responsibility as an allied state – was the message of the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Sorin Grindeanu, at the vote in Parliament.

Sorin Grindeanu: “Our main strategic ally is the one that continues to provide the most solid security umbrella in the face of external threats. The vote for this decision is a vote for the real security of Romania.”

The debates in Parliament were, however, marked by tensions. The nationalist opposition requested the suspension of the session, on the grounds that the parliamentarians would not have had enough time to study the document. SOS Romania deputy, Mihai Adrian Ţiu, requested the declassification of the document, and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) president, George Simion, stated that such a decision affects the destiny of a nation.

Wednesday’s CSAT meeting also discussed the situation in the Middle East and the economic consequences of the conflict, including the price increase on the international oil market. As for the situation of Romanians in the areas affected by the conflict, president Nicuşor Dan assured that this remains one of the main concerns of the Romanian authorities. (LS)
