A Parliamentarian group made up of the PSD, AUR and PEACE – Romania First on Tuesday tabled a censure motion against the government headed by the country’s Liberal Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan. The document was signed by 250 MPs from the PSD, AUR, POT, SOS Romania, Peace – Romania First and other unaffiliated members. The motion sharply criticized the economic and administrative policies proposed by Ilie Bolojan. The Prime Minister has been accused of preparing the biggest disposal of strategic assets of the past two decades ‘without consulting the coalition, without public debates and a minimum political commitment.’ The signatories have also said that while Romanians are feeling daily how their living standards are dropping, the Prime Minister continues to ignore the reality and present as successes a series of policies, which are in fact causing poverty and social tension. The Social-Democrats have explained in a communiqué their decision to withdraw political support for the Prime Minister and get the government dismissal as well as their intention to pave the way for a stable Executive through the aforementioned vote of no confidence.

Earlier, the Social-Democratic leader, Sorin Grindeanu said the PSD-AUR initiative is a Parliamentarian move to increase the vote’s chances of success.

Sorin Grindeanu: There are several things dividing us but there is a common goal, namely to bring the Bolojan government down. There is no post-motion political agreement.”

In turn, the AUR leader, George Simion, has shown optimism concerning the endorsement of the motion.

George Simion: “This motion will be endorsed without any problems. We have to go back to democracy and Parliamentarian procedures. This is the will of the Romanian people, not some interest groups, which do not enjoy popularity among the Romanians.” On the other hand the president of the Senate, the Liberal Mircea Abrudean, has reiterated the Liberals support for Ilie Bolojan.

Mircea Abrudean:  “There are no reasons for this government and political crisis. If the motion gets endorsed it is obviously the responsibility of PSD and AUR to come up with a ruling formula and get Parliamentarian endorsement in this respect.”

The Prime Minister has earlier cautioned that a government reshuffle at this time would translate into economic chaos and the risk of losing billions of Euros within the PNRR. In turn, President Nicusor Dan, who has repeatedly tried to solve the conflict, says that a vote of no confidence against the government was a scenario he expected as the Liberals and Social Democrats share different opinions. He said that a PSD-AUR government is very unlikely. Debates and a secret voting on this motion have been slated for Tuesday, May 5th. The motion needs a majority of 233 votes out of a total 463, to pass and bring the government down. The PSD, AUR, POT, SOS, PEACE and the unaffiliated MPs have mustered 281 votes.
