Bucharest airports recorded a passenger record in 2025. The international airports ‘Henri Coandă’ Otopeni and ‘Aurel Vlaicu’ Băneasa were transited by over 17.7 million passengers, up over 10% compared to 2024. Otopeni Airport alone recorded 17 million passengers. At the national level, Romanian airports exceeded 28.5 million passengers in 2025, according to the Romanian Airports Association. In this context, company representatives emphasize 5 points that passengers should take into account when traveling during peak season: arriving at the airport 2-3 hours before the flight, paying attention to the length of the journey to the airport, the exponential increase in passengers during the summer, online or app check-in and travel documents checked in advance. On the other hand, the new passenger terminal of the Maramureş International Airport, near Baia Mare (northern Romania), was put into use. The new terminal was a necessity with the expansion of foreign flights, the increase in charter flights, holiday flights and business flights.
Airlines are also announcing new features. The low-cost company Wizz Air has supplemented flights from the Târgu Mureș International Airport “Transilvania” (central Romania) to Rome and Milan. The number of flights to Rome (Fiumicino) has increased from two to 3 flights per week, and to Milan (Bergamo) from 3 to 4 flights per week. Wizz Air also launched, from July 1, the Bucharest Otopeni – Dubrovnik flight in the 2026 summer season. There are 3 flights per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). The Romanian airline AnimaWings has launched 5 new regular routes from Bucharest, Timișoara and Cluj-Napoca, to Rotterdam, Copenhagen, Vienna and Frankfurt. From Bucharest, AnimaWings flies twice a week (Monday and Friday) to Rotterdam. From Timisoara (western Romania), the company flies twice a week (Monday and Wednesday) to Copenhagen and also twice a week (Wednesday and Sunday) to Rotterdam. From Cluj-Napoca (northwest), AnimaWings has introduced flights to Vienna, two flights a week (Tuesday and Friday) and Frankfurt (also Tuesday and Friday). The company has also introduced 3 weekly frequencies (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) to Milan Malpensa. The airline Iberia has resumed flights on the Bucharest – Madrid route, starting with June 2026, only until the end of October 2026. The flights are operated on Wednesdays and Sundays.
On the other hand, the Romanian national airline TAROM and Etihad Airways have concluded a codeshare agreement, which connects TAROM passengers with the global network of Etihad Airways destinations, via the Abu Dhabi hub. Tickets go on sale from July, for travel from December 17, 2026. Connections will be provided with 4 frequencies per week. The agreement strengthens the connectivity of TAROM destinations in Romania and Europe (Belgrade, Budapest, Chisinau, Sofia), with those operated by Etihad Airways via Bucharest and Abu Dhabi. TAROM passengers will benefit from the issuance of a single ticket for the entire itinerary, check-in until the final destination, automatic baggage transfer and coordinated connections through the Abu Dhabi hub.
