The communist regime that came to power in the late 1940s sought to change Romanian society fundamentally, above all through processes of rapid industrialisaton and urbanisation. As a result, the country’s towns and cities saw profound changes, including in the capital, Bucharest, where large industrial districts were established and new housing projects were built to accommodate the growing population.

To promote its ideology and educate the masses, the communist state used art and culture as propaganda, and music was no exception. So, themes like industrial progress, the working class and national pride often featured in the verses of the music of those times.

The songs included in today’s show paint an image of Bucharest as a city that is developing and expanding at a fast pace, a city of industrial and technological progress, as well as a city of love and leisure.
