CONSULTATIONS Informal consultations continue in Bucharest between president Nicuşor Dan and the leaders of the parties in the former ruling coalition, the Social Democrats (PSD), the Liberals (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR) and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). The goal is to reach an agreement in principle, so that formal consultations may begin and a new prime minister may be appointed. PNL and USR have already decided to stay in opposition, while UDMR would like to restore the coalition with the same partners and is not thinking about a minority formula at this time. However, there are voices among the Liberals who believe the party should stay in power as a proof of responsibility. The interim justice and interior minister Cătălin Predoiu spoke about cooperation with other parties that share European and Euro-Atlantic values. After recently leaving the government and initiating a no-confidence motion alongside AUR (opposition), which toppled the Cabinet led by the Liberal Ilie Bolojan, PSD announced two possible scenarios: joining a pro-European coalition, or moving into the opposition. On the other hand, AUR party is waiting to be invited to consultations to convey to the president that it will not support a government in which it does not hold a seat. After the talks with the head of state, the USR leader Dominic Fritz announced he will not return to the negotiating table with PSD and intends to coordinate his steps with PNL.

FRIGATE “Regina Maria,” a Romanian Naval Forces frigate Thursday left the military port of Constanţa to take part in an EU operation in the Mediterranean Sea. During the over 40-day mission, the frigate will carry out surveillance and monitoring activities, and if necessary will take part in inspections on board suspicious ships, in order to enforce the arms embargo introduced by the United Nations on Libya. The Romanian defence ministry announced that participation in this mission reconfirms Romania’s commitment to the EU security and defense policy and the constant contribution of the Romanian Naval Forces to the efforts to preserve security at the Mediterranean.

CONSUMER PURCHASES Consumer purchases in Romania slowed down their decline in March, compared to the first two months of this year, but stay on a downward trend for the 8th consecutive month, the National Statistics Institute reports. Taking into account the number of working days and eliminating predictable seasonal influences, such as holidays, the weather or vacations, trade business decreased in March by 3.2% compared to the corresponding period in 2025, although it went up 2.6% compared to February. The drop was triggered by the fall in sales of non-food products by 7.4% and of food and beverages by 3%. Also on Thursday, Eurostat announced that Romania and Germany are the only EU member states where retail trade decreased in March.

ANNIVERSARY The National Bank of Romania launched a silver coin and a copper-plated tombac coin themed “Steaua Bucharest – 40 years since winning the European Champions Cup.” The event was attended by members of the 1986 Steaua team and the acting defence minister, Radu Miruţă. On the same occasion, the front of the Romanian Parliament building was lit on Thursday in red and blue, to celebrate the exceptional performance achieved by the football team Steaua Bucharest 40 years ago. The display was approved on Monday by the Chamber of Deputies following a request from the Steaua Army Sports Club. Official documents describe the May 7, 1986 European Cup win as a landmark of Romanian sporting excellence and a symbol of the nation’s ability to compete at the highest global level. The players and coaches from the old squad were honored in Parliament on Wednesday and received decorations from the Presidency.

MIDDLE EAST The US is waiting for a response from Iran on Thursday regarding a new peace proposal. The US President Donald Trump Wednesday said Iran appears to want a deal, noting that the last 24 hours of talks were very productive. The US proposal calls for a 30-day ceasefire extension to provide a window for negotiating a long-term peace treaty. However, there is still no word on two key US demands: the termination of Iran’s nuclear program and the unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The strait has been under an Iranian blockade for over two months, prompting Washington to retaliate last month by blocking Iranian vessels from the maritime corridor.

TENNIS The Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea Thursday qualified for the third round of the WTA 1,000 tournament in Rome, after defeating Germany’s Tatjana Maria, 6-2, 6-0. Number 27 WTA, Cîrstea now has a 6-1 head-to-head record with Tatjana Maria (54th in the world rankings). Sorana’s next opponent will be the winner of the match between the world leader Arina Sabalenka (Belarus) and Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic). (AMP)
