Romania schedules armament purchases; Romania presents the most powerful laser in the world at the Expo 2017 in Kazakhstan

BUCHAREST — Romanias Higher Defense Council meets on Tuesday in Bucharest under President Klaus Iohannis leadership to present arms purchases for the 2017-2026 period. The plan reflects the commitment to spend 2% of the GDP on defense for the next 10 years. The plan was adopted by all major political parties in 2015.



ROME – Romanian ambassador to Italy, George Bologan, is in Sicily, to discuss the situation of Romanians that are exploited or abused in the workplace. In Ragusa, he held talks with local officials. According to Radio Romanias correspondent, the ambassador said that it was the duty of Romanian citizens going to work in Italy to gain information on their future jobs and not make compromises. The European Parliament has been holding heated debates on the situation of human trafficking involving Romanian women.



MADRID — The Romanian Consulate in Barcelona has demanded additional information from local authorities in Spain on the railroad accident that has left a number of Romanians injured. At least 54 people have been wounded, five of them being in critical condition, after a train accident in Francia Station in Barcelona. The Romanian consulate in the Catalan region is monitoring the situation after the accident involving the commuter train.



LASER — It is Romanias day at the Expo 2017 in Astana, Kazakhstan. According to Radio Romanias correspondent, this is a new opportunity to present the project involving the most powerful laser in the world, hosted by the Magurele physics institute near Bucharest. The event is attended by Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu, who is also in Kazakhstan to mark 25 years of diplomatic relations. The minister also visited the Karaganda region, inhabited by a Romanian community descended from people deported in 1940 under the Soviet takeover of Bessarabia.



BUCHAREST — Two draws and a defeat — this is the roundup of the three teams representing Romanian in the first leg of the Europa League’s third preliminary round in football. In the same stage of the competition, vice-champions FCSB managed a 2-all home draw against Czech opponents Viktoria Plzen. The return legs are scheduled for next week.



FOOD — Romanian PM Mihai Tudose called on Justice Minister Tudorel Toader to work with the Ministry of Agriculture and relevant institutions to issue an law allowing the publication of names of companies that consider Romania a so-called second hand country in terms of food sales, creating a double standard. The Ministry of Agriculture said that it has studied 29 food articles that are inferior in quality to similar products sold in western European countries.
