Defense talks. Prime Minister Luca Niculescu on Thursday met US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby in Bucharest. Talks focused on concrete ways to deepen the Romania-US Strategic Partnership, with a focus on defense. Their talks highlighted Washington’s decisive role in helping Bucharest navigate increasingly complex regional challenges and the security situation in the Black Sea amid Russia’s war against Ukraine. The Romanian Prime Minister expressed strong interest in expanding defense industry cooperation with the USA through joint production, maintenance and logistics support projects to strengthen Romania’s defense industrial base. The two officials also examined security issues in the Black Sea, including daily drone incursions and attacks on commercial shipping that threaten freedom of navigation. On Wednesday, Elbridge Colby was received by President Nicușor Dan, who advocated a reinforced US economic and military presence in Romania. President Dan emphasized that the Black Sea has become one of the most dangerous and unstable maritime regions in the world from a strategic point of view, facing escalating tensions and severe spillover effects from the war in Ukraine. He recalled that Romania faces a full spectrum of hybrid threats, including cyberattacks, sabotage, aerial and maritime drone incursions, provocations and aggressive disinformation campaigns, and reiterated Bucharest’s need for continued allied support.
ECOFIN. Progress in reducing the budget deficit gives Romania a stronger standing in European negotiations and ongoing fiscal consolidation remains necessary to support the national economy, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare posted on Facebook. Minister Nazare announced he held a technical meeting on Wednesday with his ministry team to prepare for the upcoming EU Finance Ministers (ECOFIN) meeting in Brussels, scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday. Meanwhile, Nazare faces a simple motion of no confidence introduced by the nationalist and sovereignist opposition party the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, which is to be debated and voted on on Wednesday.
Bomb threat. A crisis cell was established on Thursday at Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport following a bomb threat targeting a flight from Milan to Bucharest, the Romanian Intelligence Service has said. According to the same source, the 182 passengers and 7 crew members on board were disembarked and taken into the terminal. A bomb disposal team inspected the aircraft and established that the threat was unfounded. The Bucharest Airports National Company also said that air travel at Henri Coandă Airport is taking place safely and without disruption. The Reuters news agency reports that bomb threats on Thursday forced several aircraft to make unscheduled landings across various European countries. While the source of these threats has not yet been identified, they come at a time when European officials have pointed to both Russia and Iran as being behind what they describe as “hybrid attacks” and acts of sabotage. This week, unidentified hackers have disabled refrigeration systems in supermarkets across several European countries and experts suggest that the fake bomb threats could be part of the same pattern.
Power plant. Nuclearelectrica has initiated the startup procedure for Unit 1 of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant (southeast), with resynchronization to the national grid set for Friday. The company confirmed that the reactor will reach its maximum capacity of 620 MW by Saturday. Both of the plant’s units, which supply roughly 20% of Romania’s energy needs, were shut down, the first on July 28 and the second on August 13 due to low water levels in the Danube.
Tennis. Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea qualified on Thursday for the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 tournament in Hong Kong, after defeating American player of Romanian descent Mary Stoiana 7-5, 6-1. Cîrstea (36 years old), the tournament’s top seed, won in one hour and 43 minutes. Although she trailed 5-2 in the first set against Stoiana (23 years old, ranked 114th WTA), she staged a spectacular comeback, winning five consecutive games to take the set. She dominated the second set. Sorana Cîrstea has announced that she will retire from tennis at the end of this year; if she stands by this decision, the Hong Kong tournament will be the final one of her career. In the latest WTA world rankings, published on Monday, Cîrstea matched her career-high position of 15th, climbing one spot from the previous week. Two other Romanian players also feature in the top 100: Gabriela Ruse, who retains her 60th place, and Jaqueline Cristian, who climbed four places to reach the 79th place. (CM)
