The European Parliament condemns drone incursions into EU member states, including Romania

According to a resolution adopted Thursday in Strasbourg by a large majority of MEPs, the European Union will not be intimidated by Russia’s campaign of destabilization and stands united in its determination to defend the security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of all its member states and to continue supporting Ukraine. The document was initiated by the Vice President of the European Parliament, Victor Negrescu of Romania. He notes that the resolution comes in response to recent developments in Romania, where, in the span of just a few days, a Ukrainian maritime drone jammed by Russia entered the Port of Constanța without being detected in time, exploded, and it was only by chance that it did not cause a major disaster, and a Russian aerial drone crashed into an apartment building in the Danube city of Galați, injuring two people and causing property damage.

However, according to the European Parliament, drone incursions and airspace violations within the European Union are not isolated incidents, but an integral part of Russia’s broader strategy to intimidate the Union and its allies. These hostile acts are exacerbated by an aggressive disinformation campaign aimed at intimidating people living in these areas, spreading fear, damaging local economies, and creating a pretext for possible retaliatory actions, MEPs add. They express their full solidarity with Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Romania, whose territories, airspace, or critical infrastructure have been targeted by Russian hybrid provocations. They also say there is an urgent need to accelerate the production and delivery of priority military equipment to Ukraine, particularly air defense systems, ammunition, drones, and missiles.

In addressing the threat posed by Russian drones, cooperation with the Republic of Moldova, alongside Ukraine, is essential in terms of operational effectiveness and information sharing. Therefore, according to the members of the European Parliament, member states must increase funding for Chișinău through the European Peace Facility. The resolution also calls for the urgent creation of a genuine European Defense Union and emphasizes that deeper integration, coordination, and the pooling of resources are indispensable for an effective response to Russia’s growing threats. The eastern flank of the Union and NATO must also be fully strengthened, from the Arctic to the Black Sea, on land, at sea, and in the air.

Meanwhile, from Brussels, at the meeting of European Union heads of state and government, President Nicuşor Dan announced that Portugal and Slovakia had offered to provide anti-drone equipment to Romania, bringing the number of European and allied countries supplying such aid to Romania to six. Similar announcements had previously been made by the United States, France, Italy, and Spain. (MI)
