Europe’s most valuable fencers convened in Antony, France last week for the European Championships. In mid-Olympic cycle, the competition gave us an idea of the powerhouses in fencing and the teams that are making headway. Italy and France have confirmed they are on top and fencers from France even won several medals. They stepped onto the podium’s first step three times, won five silver medals and two bronze.
Romania ended the competition in the eighth position with two medals. George Dragomir of Romania became bronze medalist in the individual men’s saber event. Then the Romanian team made up of Vlad Covaliu, George Dragomir, Radu Niţu and Răzvan Ursachi walked away with silver. For these results Radio Romania International has designated George Dragomir Athlete of the Week.
At Antony, Dragomir entered directly the second round with a 15-7 win against the Spanish Santiago Madrigal. In the rounds of 16, he defeated Sandro Bazadze, of Georgia, 15-13. He later secured a 15-14 win against Krisztian Rabb of Hungary. The Romanian lost the semifinals to Jean-Philippe Patrice of France, who won the game 7-15. Dragomir became the bronze medalist but took revenge in the teams’ contest, where Romania defeated France in the semi-finals, but lost the finals to Hungary.
Born on April 5th 1999 in Ialomiţa county, southern Romania, Dragomir signed up with CSM Unirea Slobozia, and is currently at the peak of his career in competitions. He took up fencing at the age of 12. Until the age of 17 he had already won a third place in the national championship. In 2018 he came second in the World Cup edition held in Sochi, Russia. In 2019 he became European champion with Romania’s youth team in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. In the same year, he won silver in the World Youth Championship in Torun, Poland. In 2024 he was part of the team, which won the silver medals of the European Championships in Basel. A year later, at the European championship in Genoa, Romania won no medals but made a strong comeback this year with George Dragomir as double medalist.
