Israel and Romania are not only partners but also friends, the Israeli president, Isaac Herzog said during his visit to Bucharest

‘Israel and Romania are not only partners but also friends’ this is what the Israeli President, Isaac Herzog, said during a news conference he gave jointly with Romania’s President, Nicusor Dan, in Bucharest. The Tel-Aviv leader has said that his state visit represents “a symbol of the special bond between the two nations, which has roots in centuries of Jewish history in Romania.”
Isaac Herzog has also said that Israel and Romania are today meeting “as two strong, vibrant democracies linked by deeply shared values and 70 years of diplomatic relations.” The high Israeli official explained that before coming to Bucharest, he went to Iasi in northern Romania to commemorate the pogrom, which took place there in June 1941.“ He says he recalled the atrocities and voices hope the lessons will be learnt and all the necessary measures taken so that the Holocaust is never forgotten.
According to President Herzog, ‘anti-Semitism is once again spreading around the world.’ He has also referred to the challenges presently facing his country and made an appeal to some Europeans who asked for sanctions against Israel.
At the end of his address, the Israeli President invited President Dan to visit his country. In turn, the Romanian leader has said the relationship between the two countries is strong at political, economic but also at human level.
According to President Dan, the strong bond is represented by the community of Romanian-born Israelis who contributed to the construction and the development of the State of Israel. Nicusor Dan has also mentioned the cooperation between the two countries in various fields: economy, security, defence industry, agriculture and IT adding there is a big potential of developing these relations in both directions.
At the same time, Nicușor Dan has pleaded for stepping up diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, underlying the importance of a durable solution for regional stability. He added that action must be taken against hate speech also. ‘We must take firm and inspired action against this type of activities so that we may succeed in implementing de-escalation, deradicalization, a communion between people of different opinions, religions and creeds’ Nicusor Dan has said. During his visit to Romania, the Head of the Israeli State delivered a speech in Parliament and met Senate president, Mircea Abrudean, with whom he talked about the consolidation of the Romanian-Israeli partnership. Isaac Herzog also held talks with president of the Chamber of Deputies, Sorin Grindeanu, who said that Israel continues to be a strategic partner but also Romania’s main partner in the Middle East.
