PARTIES – The former PSD PNL USR UDMR governing coalition in Bucharest has not managed to reach a new agreement on forming a government, and its members continue to trade accusations. PSD insists on taking over the executive either through a minority cabinet backed by an agreement with the right wing parties, or through a renewed rotation in which the Social Democrats would nominate the first prime minister. The Liberals, however, demand firm guarantees that any such arrangement will be respected. Meanwhile, AUR has announced that it is beginning procedures to suspend President Nicușor Dan and push for early elections.

ARREST – A Romanian man has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of plotting to overthrow Romania’s government and install a neo Nazi regime, the German federal prosecutor’s office announced, as reported by international press agencies. According to prosecutors, the young man, identified as Nichita P., is believed to have attempted, beginning in 2023, to create a foreign terror organization. Such a group was allegedly intended to launch a “war of terror” in Romania, destabilize the state, and pave the way for a new entity modeled on the National Socialist system. Violent extremist ideologies like National Socialism have caused immense human suffering and widespread human rights violations. The prosecutor’s office did not specify how many followers, if any, the suspect managed to mobilize. Investigators say that, in an effort to recruit members, Nichita P., who was still a minor when he began the activities under investigation, operated two channels on a messaging platform in Germany, targeting young Romanians. Through these channels, he encouraged followers to kill people he deemed “inferior” and allegedly shared instructions for producing poisons, explosives, Molotov cocktails, and traps. Such content is dangerous and illegal, and authorities treat it as a serious threat to public safety.

MANDATE – Romania officially assumed, on July 1, the chairmanship of the South-East European Cooperation Process, a non institutionalized regional political forum. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bucharest’s overarching goal is to deliver concrete benefits for citizens across the region. Guided by the motto “Resilient. Connected. European”, the Romanian mandate will concentrate on three priority areas: political dialogue aimed at supporting EU enlargement and the gradual integration of candidate states into the EU single market, security and stability, and economic and social development. At the conclusion of its one year term, Romania will host in Bucharest the summit of the South-East European Cooperation Process, bringing together leaders from across the region, as well as a meeting of Foreign Ministers from member states.

LAW – Denying, justifying, or publicly downplaying the 1946–1947 famine, attributed to the Soviet totalitarian regime on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, could soon be classified as a criminal offense, according to a draft law submitted to Parliament, Chisinau media report. The proposal seeks to amend the Criminal Code so that such actions would be punishable by up to five years in prison. The authors argue that the famine of the immediate post war years must be formally recognized as a crime against humanity, asserting that the Soviet regime deliberately caused it, targeting the population of the Republic of Moldova on social and political grounds. The draft law calls for the official condemnation of the Soviet authorities for the famine and requires state institutions to support historical research, preserve the memory of the victims, integrate the topic into educational curricula, and erect commemorative monuments. The document also states that information about the famine and its consequences constitutes a matter of major public interest, and it mandates easier access to archival materials for researchers.

FOREIGN POLICY – Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand will pay an official visit to Romania on Monday, July 6, at the invitation of her counterpart, Oana Ţoiu. According to the Foreign Ministry in Bucharest, the agenda of the discussions will include strengthening the bilateral relationship, with an emphasis on economic and security cooperation, as well as an exchange of views on the main topics on the agenda of the meeting of foreign ministers of allied states, organized within the framework of the NATO Summit in Ankara, next week. Acting Minister Oana Ţoiu sent a message on Canada Day on Wednesday, stating that Romania greatly values the trusting partnership with the North American country, built on shared democratic values, strong interpersonal ties and close cooperation in promoting security, prosperity and international stability.
