NATO At the NATO summit currently underway in Ankara, Romania’s President Nicusor Dan is expected to underline the need for strengthening air and maritime defence and to stand for the consolidation of the defence and deterrence posture on the Eastern Flank. During the summit, the head of the Romanian state will highlight the importance of the continuation of the allied support for security in the Black Sea region and draw attention to the consequences Russia’s actions have at regional level including against Bucharest. On the summit’s sidelines on Wednesday, President Dan held a bilateral meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, during which he said that ‘Canada is one of Romania’s most trustworthy partners.’ We are going to develop the consolidated partnership between Romania and Canada and fully capitalize on the opportunities it offers, to the benefit of our citizens and of a strong transatlantic alliance, the Romanian president wrote on Facebook. He invited the Canadian Prime Minister to Bucharest and he accepted the invitation to visit Canada. On Tuesday at the NATO Forum for the Security and Defence Industry, Romania signed several memorandums of understanding on anti-drone defence programmes. Romania has also joined the allies who signed the declaration on their common intention on setting up the Defence Security and Resilience Bank coordinated by Canada and will be hosting one of the regional offices of the aforementioned institute.
AMENDMENT Romania’s Defence Minister, Radu Miruta, on Wednesday announced that on the sidelines of the ongoing NATO summit he signed an amendment to the memorandum of understanding between the governments of Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey on setting up the Black Sea Mine Countermeasures Task Group (MCM Black Sea) with a view to expanding missions for the protection of critical submarine infrastructure. According to a communiqué released by the Defence Ministry and taken over by AGERPRES, the signing of the document highlighted the joint commitment of Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey to strengthening allied cooperation in the maritime field. The missions carried out by the Romanian Navy jointly with its regional partners have contributed to the presence of a permanent task force in the responsibility area, including in Romania’s Exclusive Economic Area, not only as a deterrent but also as a rapid response instrument, the communiqué also says.
PNRR Romania still has to attract over 4.5 billion Euros worth of grants through its National Plan of Recovery and Resilience, also known as PNRR, this being the country’s most important project in the months of July and August – the country’s interim Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, says. He explains that in order not to lose this money, several reforms are still to be implemented, several laws to be debated upon and endorsed in Parliament as the incumbent interim government cannot assume responsibility for these laws. The bills will be submitted to the Parliament groups, party leaders and the boards of the two chambers of the Legislature by the end of this week.
WAR Intense fighting continued along the frontline in south-eastern Ukraine, whose forces have today reported over 200 clashes in several sectors, DPA reports. The city of Pokrovsk, in the Donetsk region, has reportedly seen the fiercest clashes after the Russian forces initiated over 40 onslaughts against the Ukrainian positions there, the Ukrainian Chief of Staff says. Russia has also stepped up its operations against civilian targets in Ukraine. According to Governor Oleg Kiper, a Russian missile attack wounded six in the port city of Odessa, in the country’s south, on Tuesday. Explosions have also been reported in the city of Kharkiv, in eastern Ukraine. The Russian forces have recently stepped up their attacks against civilian targets in Ukraine in an attempt to exert more pressure on Kyiv.
FOOTBALL Romania’s football champions, Universitatea Craiova, will be up against the Belarusian side ML Vitebsk tonight in the first round of the Champions League’s first preliminary leg. The game will be taking place in Mezokovesd, in Hungary, and the decisive round will be played in Craiova on July 15. In the first preliminary round of Europa League, Romania’s vice-champions, Universitatea Cluj, will be taking on Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv on July 9. The return game will be taking place in Romania on July 16.
WEATHER An amber code alert for wind and heavy downpours comes into effect tonight in almost the entire Romanian territory with the exception of several counties in the west and south-west. Winds of 50 – 70 kilometers an hour are expected and in some regions the wind speed will exceed 80 kilometers an hour. Heavy downpours, thunderstorms and small to medium-size hail are also expected. Daytime temperatures are ranging between 20 and 33 Celsius.
