Empowering women in leadership: insights from the ST-ART Leadership Academy

Last week, Romania’s premier scientific and innovation hub—Măgurele—became the focal point for empowerment, multilateral dialogue, and forward-thinking leadership. Organised in collaboration with Soroptimist International and held under the patronage of the Romanian National Commission for UNESCO, Măgurele hosted the ST-ART Leadership Academy.
Bringing together an ambitious new generation of young women leaders, the Academy offered an intensive week of training, interdisciplinary exchange, and networking. At the very heart of the event was a compelling roundtable discussion titled “Women in Leadership: Why Does It Matter, If It Matters?”
The program bridges STEM disciplines with art, culture, and the humanities, demonstrating that modern leadership requires not only technological competence, but also ethical judgment and vision. Speaking via videolink on the sidelines of the conference, Romania’s permanent Delegate to UNESCO and President of the UNESCO General Conference, Ambassador Simona Miculescu, highlighted the importance of the event.
“Bringing a new generation of women leaders to Măgurele, Romania’s leading science hub, for a week dedicated to leadership, knowledge, and exchange says something important about the future we want to build.
This brings me naturally to the question at the heart of this round table: ‘Women in leadership, why it matters, if it matters.’ As former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan so powerfully stated, ‘there is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.’ His words remain profoundly relevant because empowering women is not a matter of symbolic representation; it is a condition for stronger institutions, more resilient communities, and more sustainable societies.
Visible women leaders expand the horizon of possibility for younger generations, and because the problems we face are simply too complex for us to exclude perspectives.”
Ambassador Miculescu’s message underscores the core mission of initiatives like the ST-ART Leadership Academy: leadership isn’t built in isolation. It requires mentorship, opportunity, and the courage to step forward even before every doubt has disappeared.
Throughout the academy in Măgurele, participants engage in hands-on workshops, peer-to-peer exchanges, and high-level panels focused on closing the gender gap—particularly in emerging fields like artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and scientific innovation. As highlighted during the roundtable, as technology continues to redefine decision-making globally, women must not remain mere passive users or beneficiaries; they must be actively involved in designing, regulating, and steering these critical systems.
By fostering ties across the Balkans and broader international networks, the ST-ART Leadership Academy serves as a vital springboard. It equips young professionals with the tools, confidence, and cross-disciplinary insights needed to break glass ceilings and shape a more inclusive, resilient future.
