During its half-year presidency of the Council of the EU, Romania has acted in a prompt, effective and professional manner. This is Romanian PM Viorica Dancila’s opinion at the end of the country’s mandate that focused on cohesion among citizens, communities, regions and member states.

PM Dancila: “We have acted on the belief that the EU can move forward based on the founding ideas of the European project, only by maintaining cohesion and bridging the gaps between member states in all their forms. In a strong Europe, the rights and freedoms of all citizens are respected and no one is left behind.”

Romania has advocated for the advancement of the social dimension, the promotion of gender equality and the fight against anti-Semitism, xenophobia and hate speech and has proven to be a responsible and capable EU member, that fully understands the European context, the decision making process and the sensitivities of the member states. The review in figures shows that 2,500 meetings and events were held, of which 300 were staged in Romania, 90 legislative files were closed and 84 conclusions of the EU Council were adopted on various topics of common interest.

Bucharest’s activity has been appreciated by all partners, Minister Delegate for European Affairs, George Ciamba has said: “It proves that Romania is not only a EU member in its full right, but also a member state able to decide the European agenda and generate results at European level, for all citizens. By assuming a neutral stand, we have succeeded to win our partners’ trust in our actions as member state, which should have long-term positive effects. Due to its remarkable results, Romania has won the trust of the European institutions and the member states, something that I believe can be further capitalised on, in promoting our interests at EU level.”

Romania has wished the Finnish Presidency of the EU Council good luck and has voiced its Government’s availability to work with the new leadership of the European institutions to improve the European project. (Translated by Elena Enache)
