Romania at Expo 2025 Osaka
160 countries and regions take part in the Expo 2025 Osaka, which opened on Sunday

Romania, alongside 159 countries and regions, takes part for six months in the Osaka World Expo. The theme of this year’s event, opened on an artificial island near the Japanese city, is the society of the future, with an emphasis on artificial intelligence and space.
The opening ceremony took place on Sunday, in the presence of Emperor Naruhito and the prime minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishiba. Romania was represented by the commissioner general Ferdinand Nagy, who explained that this is the largest international public diplomacy event of the year.
The latest technological achievements are presented in Osaka. National pavilions are surrounded by a giant wooden structure, the visual symbol of Expo 2025, inspired by traditional Japanese architecture. The approximately 2-kilometer long and 20-meter tall ring has already been recognised by the Guinness World Records as the largest wooden architectural structure in the world.
The concept of the Romanian pavilion, called “The Romanian Magic Box”, has been developed by students with the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and City Planning in Bucharest and showcases an interactive and multi-sensory approach.
It is located in the vicinity of the pavilions of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Poland, and is part of a section devoted to innovative and sustainable solutions for protecting and saving lives.
Events aimed at the economic and commercial promotion of Romania will target fields such as the economy, research, education and energy, digitisation, IT&C and the promotion of investment opportunities. Also, the Romanian foreign ministry reports that, at a cultural level, five “large-scale” artistic events will be organised on the World Expo stages and 2,000 live events will be held within the Romanian Pavilion.
Romania Day at Expo 2025 Osaka is scheduled for June 26 and will be marked by the organisation of a Multi-sector Economic Forum attended by over 80 companies from the country, relevant members of the Japanese business community as well as high-ranking officials of the two states.
The commissioner general Ferdinand Nagy stated that the Romanian Pavilion presents “a constantly developing country, a space that conveys hope, authenticity and a brave vision” of the future.
In turn, Romania’s ambassador to Tokyo, Ovidiu Raeţchi, said the country’s presence with a pavilion built within the World Expo is a special opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties, in the context of the excellent relations between Romania and Japan confirmed by the Strategic Partnership that the two countries signed on March 7, 2023.
Romania is at its 25th participation in an international or world exhibition. The last presence was at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai, which was rescheduled for October 2021 – March 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. (AMP)
