Cold and rain have engulfed Romania at the end of spring. Meteorologists have issued orange and yellow code alerts against heavy rainfall in the eastern half of the country. In isolated areas, it has rained heavily for nearly 24 hours. The weather is cold and extremely cold, and, temporarily, the wind has intensified with gusts of up to 40-50 km/h in general, and, in the high mountain areas, over 80-90 km/h. The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations has mobilized additional resources in counties targeted by heavy rain and flood alerts. Hail was reported in the eastern half of the country, and streets and households were flooded in some areas.

In Bucharest, authorities have warned that one big issue is gutters and sewage drains on main roads. These are often clogged with dust, dirt, fallen leaves and possibly waste, thus preventing rainwater from draining, causing large accumulations of water in the event of heavy rainfall over short periods of time. Authorities are on high alert, because the forecast doesn’t look good. Meteorologists expect heavy rainfall throughout the week, especially in the eastern half of the country, where it will rain almost every day. On the bright side, in much of the country, the amount of rain has restored the water reserve in the soil, considering the large deficit previously accumulated since the start of the agricultural year.

In turn, the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management issued a code red warning in place until noon on Tuesday, as a result of significant amounts of rainfall in the last hours, in response to the current weather forecasts, as well as the effects of water propagation. The dangerous hydrological phenomena targeted the hydrographic basins in counties in central Romania, where experts warn against such hazards as runoff on slopes, torrents and streams, flash floods on small rivers, but also severe effects such as local floods and dangerous increases in water levels above the reference threat level. An orange code against flash floods was in place on Monday in areas along eastern watercourses and a yellow flood code for watercourses in the east and south. In some areas, hail damaged car windshields, destroyed crops, and in many settlements in Dâmboviţa and Prahova (south), hail created a layer of ice on the ground. Also, in settlements in almost all the targeted areas, streets and households were flooded. In Prahova County, firefighters removed trees fallen on roads and on several houses. Two people were struck by lightning during thunderstorms in a town in Caraş-Severin (west), and one of them died. (VP)
