The Middle East causes more concern

The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran is causing international concern

Hundreds of people have recently fallen victims to the armed conflict that broke out on Friday between Israel and the Islamic regime of Iran. With its already famous precision, Israel has killed the head of Iran’s armed forces, the head of the paramilitary group the Revolutionary Guard as well as six nuclear scientists.

The Israeli attacks have caused rage in Tehran, which retaliated by launching ballistic missiles against the Israeli cities. In spite of the significant advance of its uranium enrichment programme, Iran has repeatedly said its nuclear programme has exclusively peaceful purposes and has denied the allegation that it actually works on building atomic bombs. However, Israel believes the opposite and argues that by hitting Iran’s nuclear military infrastructure it defends its right to existence. The Israeli attacks have also targeted the Iranian surface-to-surface missile installations and other military objectives in the country’s west. Bombs also fell on Tehran though.

The situation is explosive and no diplomatic solution is envisaged to the conflict for now. According to Reuters, Iran has told mediators in Qatar and Oman that it is not willing to talk about a truce as long as they are under Israeli attacks and is going to commence talks on a ceasefire only after the latter ends its attacks.

Israel’s western allies, including the United States, are supporting its right to defence. And the European Union through the voice of the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, says a diplomatic solution is more urgent than ever for the sake of the regional stability and global security.

The Foreign Ministry in Bucharest has voiced its profound concern regarding the escalation of the security situation in the Middle East. The diplomatic efforts are essential to prevent further escalation and to ensure a negotiated and verifiable solution regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, based on the principle of non-proliferation, the Romanian diplomacy says.

The Ministry has also reiterated Israel’s right to defence and protect its population. At the same time it says that regional security needs active diplomatic commitments. Romania, says the Foreign Ministry, will continue to coordinate closely with its partners and allies for a joint contribution to the region’s durable stability.

In another development, Romania’s diplomatic missions and consular offices in the affected region are fully mobilized and ready to provide assistance to the Romanian citizens. The Foreign Ministry in Bucharest has reiterated the recommendation for the Romanian citizens in Israel and Iran to announce their presence to Romania’s diplomatic missions in these countries against the latest developments in regional security.

The Foreign Ministry continues to monitor the situation and recommends the Romanian nationals to monitor the updates released by the local authorities, observe their recommendations and keep in touch with the representatives of the air companies for the latest updates on flight schedules.
