Romania's water polo team is one step away from the quarterfinals of the World Championships in Singapore

At the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, Romania’s water polo team was defeated on Wednesday by Olympic champions Serbia, 19-9, in the last match of Group A. The Romanian water polo players finished third in the group and will play Hungary on Friday for a place in the quarter-finals. In the other playoff matches, Serbia will face Japan, Brazil will face Greece, and Canada will face Montenegro. Italy, the United States, Croatia, and Spain qualified directly for the quarterfinals.
The WTA 250 women’s tennis tournament in Iași, with 239,000 euro in prize money has reached the round of 16. In the final tournament in September, Romania will face the Netherlands, Poland, and Qatar in the group stage. The top two teams will qualify for the round of 16. Romania has not participated in a men’s volleyball world championship for 43 years.
Also in volleyball, let’s note the opponents of the teams representing Romania in the Champions League, determined by the draw that took place on Tuesday in Luxembourg. In the men’s competition, Dinamo Bucharest will face North Macedonian team Strumica in the first round. If they get past the Balkan team, Dinamo will play the winner of the match between Dutch team Orion Doetinchem and Slovenian team Volley Ljubljana in the second round. In the women’s competition, Volei Alba Blaj will face two very strong opponents in Group A of the Champions League. The Transylvanian team has been placed in a group with Turkish champions VakifBank Istanbul, six-time winners of the Champions League, and European runners-up Savino Del Bene Scandicci from Italy. The group will be completed by a team from the preliminaries. The Champions League group matches will take place between November 2025 and February 2026. Volei Alba Blaj will be playing in the Champions League groups for the seventh time. In 2018 they reached the final of the competition. (MI)
