VISIT Romania’s Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, will be paying a working visit to the ex-soviet, Romanian-speaking Republic of Moldova on Saturday, the first in his capacity as head of the government. The Romanian official will be having talks with his counterpart in Chisinau, Dorin Recean. Talks will be focusing on topics of mutual interest, including the projects funded by Romania through non-reimbursable funds and also on aspects related to the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. Prime Minister Bolojan is expected to confirm the special character of the bilateral relations as well as Romania’s staunch support for the Republic of Moldova’s EU accession. Romania’s president, Nicusor Dan, will also be in Chisinau on August 31, the Day of the Romanian Language, the Department for Information & Communication with Mass-Media of the Moldovan Presidency has announced.
DIPLOMACY The annual Meeting of the Romanian Diplomacy will be taking place in Bucharest over August 25-26, the Foreign Ministry has announced. The event will bring together the heads of Romania’s diplomatic and consular missions abroad as well as state officials. The event is expected to also include a videoconference, which will involve the participation of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas. Foreign Ministers from the Republic of Moldova and Poland as well as the NATO Deputy Secretary General. High on the agenda are topics related to the strategic security, the OECD accession or the European Union enlargement.
TENNIS The Romanian tenis player, Sorana Cirstea (112th WTA) has qualified for the semifinals of the WTA 250 in Cleveland Ohio, a competition with total prizes of more than 275 thousand dollars. Cirstea has outperformed the competition’s odds-on favourite, Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, 6-4, 6-1. Cirstea has thus obtained 116 WTA points and 11,970 dollars. In the competition’s semifinals, the Romanian will be meeting for the first time Anastasia Zakharova (100th WTA) who benefitted from the withdrawal of German player Eva Lys.
FOOTBALL Romania’s football champion, FCSB, ended in a two-all draw their away match against the Scottish side Aberdeen FC in the first round of the Europa League play-off. Vice-champions CFR Cluj came a cropper, 7-2, against Swedish side BK Haecken, in the first round of the Conference League’s play-off. ”It was a shameful defeat, the worst in my 25-year career”, CFR headcoach, Dan Petrescu, says before handing in his resignation. In the same stage of the competition, Universitatea Craiova, from southern Romania, will be playing Turkish side Istanbul Başakşehir. The return matches are to take place next week.
FESTIVAL The 27th International George Enescu Festival is due to kick off on Sunday, August 24. This year we mark 70 years since the death of the greatest Romanian composer and the present edition is an opportunity to bring to the forefront his artistic legacy and its profound impact upon the universal classical music. The event is expected to bring together over four thousand artists from Romania and abroad who, until September 21, will be performing in over 95 concerts and performances. Radio Romania Music, the only Romanian channel entirely devoted to classical music with internationally-recognized performances, will be broadcasting 63 of the concerts taking place in Bucharest. 11 of the festival’s concerts have also been included in the summer session of the European Radio Union.
